Ever since Yellow was little, he'd been seeing the same girl in his dreams every night.
He was smart (or so he was told), so he knew what he was having were lucid dreams; when a person knows they're asleep.
The place where they met changed a lot, sometimes places he knew, but the most common seemed to be a grove; a clearing surrounded by tall trees and covered in plants and flowers, he couldn't deny it was very beautiful.
They didn't really talk much, but that didn't mean they spent all night in silence either, the girl seemed fond of making things with all the different flowers.
She made daisy chains, crowns, and once spent most of the night (or at least a while) making a messy picture of him. He complained that it looked nothing like him, despite not really thinking that.
When he woke up, he realised that was the first time he'd ever heard her laugh; Yellow couldn't deny finding her laugh pretty, though he'd never admit that to anyone.
----------
"Yellow!" Red, his roommate, called. "You awake yet?"
Yellow scowled, shaking the blanket off his shoulders, he never really used his bed, at least for sleeping, always falling asleep at his work bench, yet every morning he'd wake up to his blanket draped over his shoulders, something he knew Red was responsible for, despite the red head's denials.
"Yeah," he sighed, stretching.
He was used to the cramp by this point, something that came with sleeping in a chair every night.
Red poked his head around the door. "Cool, well I'm going to work now, I made you breakfast."
"Thanks," the blonde said. "See you later Red,"
"Oh, and you really need to stop sleeping in that chair, you're gonna have a hunch by the time you get old." Red tutted.
"That's not how it works!" Yellow snapped, despite both of them knowing that was how it worked.
"Yeah yeah, maybe your girlfriend can talk you into the idea." Red waved and shut the door, barely dodging the inevitable shouting.
"She's not my girlfriend!" Yellow shouted, huffing in annoyance.
He'd mentioned her once! Sure she was pretty, but she wasn't his girlfriend!
"She isn't even real..." he grumbled as he left his room and grabbed the toast Red made for him.
"Who's not real?" Green, their other roommate, asked. "Your dream girlfriend?" he joked.
Yellow just slapped his forehead, sometimes he really hated his roommates.
----------
That night he woke up at the edge of a forest, over-looking the ocean.
"Hello," his friend smiled brightly, arms folded behind her back.
"Hello." he returned, imitating her, except his smile wasn't quite as genuine as hers, ever since high school when someone found out about her and joked about her not being real...
"Are you okay?" she asked, stepping forward, arms out like he was going to attack her, not that he ever would, whether she was real or not.
He walked over to the water and sat down, legs hanging over the side. "You're not real."
"You don't think I'm real?" she asked, assuming that's what he meant.
Yellow sighed, not denying it. "I've known you my whole life, yet I don't know anything about you, except that you like flowers."
The dark haired girl smiled sadly. "You've never asked," she pointed out.
He frowned. "Would you tell me if I did ask?"
The girl nodded happily, though still with the sad look in her eyes. "Of course, we've known each other long enough, right?"
The blonde just nodded.
"I have an idea!" she chirped cheerily. "We'll each ask a question, and both of us have to answer."
Yellow just raised an eyebrow, quietly agreeing.
"After you," she said, flapping her hand at him in a shooing gesture before lying down. "I promise I'll answer anything."
Yellow frowned thoughtfully; there were plenty of things he wanted to know about her, just what to ask first... "What's your name?"
She giggled. "What's my eye color?" she shot back.
"That's not how the game works." Yellow sighed, at least he had a good idea about her personality now...
"I made up the game, I can change the rules if I want," she pointed out cheekily. "Besides, they're the same answer."
Yellow felt his cheeks warm as he looked into her eyes, and for just a second, wondered if Green and Red were onto something. "Blue!"
She winced. "You don't have to shout,"
"Sorry," he'd been trying to get rid of that embarrassing thought. "I'm Yellow," he said, offering her a hand.
Blue didn't sit up, but still shook it.
"Nice to meet you," she giggled. "After all these years."
Yellow's lips twitched. "Same,"
"My turn!" Blue sat up, only to move onto her side. "That place we go to with all the flowers, what's your favourite?"
Yellow blinked in confusion. "What?"
"What's your favourite flower in that place we always go to?" she reiterated. "Mine are primroses."
Yellow blushed and mumbled. "Bluebells."
Blue's smile widened. "Your turn."
"If you are real..." he began, glancing at her and receiving a nod. "What do you do?"
"Like, what's my job?" Blue asked.
Yellow nodded. "Where do you work? Unless you're still in college."
Blue sat up with a scowl. "What do you mean 'still'? How do you know I went to college?"
"We're the same age, and you always looked tired when I was in college." Yellow pointed out, despite knowing that didn't prove anything.
"I went to college," she confirmed, eyeing him suspiciously. "For horticulture, and I work at a restaurant." she huffed, trying not to sulk, had she been that easy to read back then?
"I went for engineering," Yellow smiled.
"Let me guess, you work as an engineer now." she asked with a mischievous grin. "You always smell of oil." she stated bluntly.
"Yeah I do," he confirmed.
Blue raised an eyebrow, expecting more of a reaction. "Alright, next question..."
