After a delightful day spent with True, I woke up feeling optimistic. The only thing on my schedule was lunch with my dad, so I decided to keep it casual. I threw on a white crop top and black trousers, With a sense of anticipation, I stepped out and hopped into my car. Before heading out, I received a text from my mom, letting me know that my dad had already arrived at the restaurant and reserved a table at the back. She also reminded me to call her when I returned from lunch.
As I fast-forwarded to the restaurant, I spotted my dad sitting at the table. With a smile, I greeted him, "Hey, Dad," as I placed my belongings down and settled into the seat across from him.
"Hey, honey," he responded, "How was the ride over here?"
"It was good," I replied, my optimism still intact. We ordered our food, and then my dad broached a topic that had been looming between us, "So, I saw that you and True went out for ice cream yesterday."
I nodded and decided to address the elephant in the room, "Dad, I'm just going to say it since you're not going to. I'm sorry."
"Well, who said I wasn't going to?" he replied.
"No, Dad, let's not beat around the bush. I just wanted to get the awkwardness out of the way and say it," I admitted.
"Well, you did a good job of that, didn't you?" he retorted.
I was about to respond when the waiter approached our table, ready to take our orders.
"I'll have the chicken salad," my dad ordered.
The waiter then turned to me, "And for you, ma'am?"
My dad, however, decided to take a dig at me, "She'll just have the side salad. She doesn't need to eat anything more."
I looked down at my feet, feeling a twinge of embarrassment. My dad's comment stung. "Oh, come on, honey. What did you expect to happen? You show up in an outfit like that and not expect me to notice how much weight you've put on."
I rolled my eyes, a mix of frustration and disappointment evident in my expression, "I honestly don't know what I expected from you. I thought you actually wanted to give our relationship another chance, obviously I was wrong."
I stood up from the table, my patience wearing thin, and grabbed some cash from my wallet. "Maybe you should stop blaming me and focus on something other than commenting on my weight." I handed the waiter a generous $100 tip and walked out, leaving my dad to ponder his actions.
