Okay, so there are two sides. Both sides believe that something belongs to them. Let's say they are kids named Paul and Neil. Paul has a toy that he owned for a long time. Neil wants what Paul have, so the adult says they share custody of the toy. But while sharing the toy, Neil resorts to brutal tactics to attain the toy, like violence and munipulation (to the public) and played the victim. And they believed him. For years and years, this has gone on and everyone stood by and did nothing. So Paul finally resorts to violence and it's documented as the worst thing that they've ever done. Now, were his actions morally correct? No. But one can understand why they acted this way. So Neil retaliated with even more barbaric tactics than before and they were excused or ignored by the general public.
