You peer nervously out the passenger window of the BMW, to the building where Steve is dropping you off.
Before you exit, you turn to the two still in the car, waiting for you to leave.
You grin and outstretch your arm, pulling in Steve for a hug.
"Alright, you two, good luck." You say, also regarding Robin in the back.
Steve snorts, his face twisted with an unbecoming cockiness.
"Luck?" He questions. "It's a movie rental store; it's not exactly, oh I don't know, an entry level exam to become a cop now, is it? I think you need more luck than me today."
You respond with a blank expression, tinged with a subtle hint of smugness tugging at the corner of your mouth.
"Who's interviewing you?" You ask.
"Keith." Robin answers.
You peel your attention to your oldest friend in the back. She, too, wears that smug, ironic expression, and for a moment, a silent exchange of knowing passes between the pair of you.
You turn back to Steve.
"Yeaaahhh... good luck," You repeat, tone drawn out and flat. "And remember, if Keith asks you what your favourite movie is, say something cool, like The Breakfast Club, or something."
"The what Club?" He frowns and Robin mutters some derogatory quip under her breath.
"Never mind," You shake your head before raising a stern finger. "But you cannot say Risky Business."
"So, lie?"
"Exactly - your favourite movie isn't Risky Business, and Robin isn't a secret sucker for a chick flick."
The girl in the back makes a noise of protest, stammering over herself before attempting to shush you. You, on the other hand, give her a playful wink.
"Yeah, as if she could lie about that, like she didn't force me to watch Grease 2 with her last night," Steve rolls his eyes and Robin sticks out her tongue. He tilts his head sidelong, voice raised when he states, "Which, by the way, was a horrible movie."
Robin shrugs.
"And if you bring that up with Keith, I'm just gonna pretend I have no idea what you're talking about." She remarks.
You huff out a big breath, shoulders visibly rising and falling.
"Okay, it's time." You confirm.
"Good luck!" Robin stretches forward between the two front seats, to shake you by the shoulder and give it a supportive squeeze.
You touch her hand with your fingertips, shooting to her a weak smile.
Steve is next to reach out to you, cupping the side of your throat right where it meets your jaw.
"Come here," He utters, leaning forward to kiss you lightly on the lips, then pulling away but lingering there a moment to offer some comfort, "You'll do great."
"Ugh, gross, you guys!" Robin complains.
"Get over it, Buckley." Steve warmly teases.
The girl grumbles.
"Seriously, if I'd have known how mushy you two would be, I would never have planned with Dustin to set you up."
You giggle.
"Which you failed at miserably, by the way," You say. "You should've just left us to it; I mean, we figured it out ourselves eventually, didn't we?"
"Only took us 3 freaking years," Steve adds amusedly. "And besides, you think this is gross? You should see us behind closed doors." When he says this, his eyes dazzle at you with a flicker of mischief and you quirk him a flirtatious eyebrow.
