Just before Shane and I went to the hospital we stopped at my brothers elementary school. He wanted to tell my mom what had just happened to my dad.

I saw my mom talking to one of the other moms. Everyone stared as the cop cars pulled up to the school. When we got out of the police car my mom looked at me like what just happened.

Shane did all the talking. My mom looked at me but didn't say anything to me. Like if I were okay or do I need some one to talk to. No, she just walked over to Carl and told him what had happened.

Once Carl was born I think he became my moms favorite no matter what I would do. For example be one of the make an amazing play on my basketball and softball team, get all A's or get a perfect attendance. No, none of those thing were that good for her but my dad, my friends and Shane they would be proud of me.

Shane and I headed to the hospital. Once we walked inside we headed to the front desk and they told us to wait for about thirty minutes. Then I could see my dad.

Shane and I walked over to the waiting area and just sat there waiting for the time to go by. Between that time Shane asked, "How are you holding up? You know if you need some one to talk to you can always talk to me."

"I'm okay and I know. I mean you have been my dads best friend since I was born and you have always been there for me," I replied. He put his arm around me and held me close until one of the nurses would come out and tell me that I can see my dad.

About a thirty five minutes later a nurse finally came out and told us what room my dad was in. I wanted to run down to where he was to see him but Shane wouldn't let me. So I walked as fast as I could to get down there.

When I entered his room I asked the nurse who was in there with him, "What's was wrong with him?"

"He is in a coma and we don't know when he will wake up or if he will wake up," the nurse explained to me. When the nurse left I just looked at Shane not knowing how to respond to this situation. He pulled me into long hug.

"Jess I know this hard on you. But I'll help you get through this," He said to me trying to help me calm down.

"Thanks Shane," I said letting go of him. Shane left the room so I could have some time with my dad. I pulled up one of the chairs by the window up next to his bed.

Even though I knew he couldn't hear me I still said, "Dad I know that you probably can't hear me but I'm going to stay with you until you wake up. I am not going to leave your side not for anything not even for school or work." After saying that I felt a single tear run down my face.

1 week later

Shane burst into the door. "What's wrong?" I asked all confused and a little scared. Everything had been getting a little weird. The way people acted to the environment.

"The military are killing people," I just looked at Shane like he was crazy. That's when I heard a gunshots and I knew he was right. I looked back at him and he told me to stay here for a minute.

He left the room. I did as I was told and when he came back he did something to my dad. I think he was checking for a pulse.

Then one of the military guys came into the room Shane pulled me down onto the floor. Once the man left Shane and I got up and he said, "Come on we got to get out of here."

"No, I can't go. I'm not going to leave my dad in here to rot," Shane just looked at me like I crazy.

"Jess what the hell are you talking about. We need to go!" He yelled at me thinking that yelling would get the idea into my head.

"No! Shane what he wakes up and we're not here for. He could die out there," I told him hoping deep down he would trust me.

"I hope your right about this," he said a little worried and pulled me into a hug. He told me were he might be and if not there he would leave a note. When he left I heard him put something against the door. You just made the biggest mistake of you life I thought to myself.

This was going to be the last time I would see Shane in long time and I knew that would regret this decision for the rest of my life.
