Three sets of paws thundered through the forest. Weaving through trees. Leaping over logs. Dodging boulders. Biting gently on the scruff. It was exhilarating running in wolf form. The wind through my fur as I ran. The dirt under my paws. I felt alive after being cooped up in my office for so long.
I allowed Akira control. She continued running with the others. She ran until we came to a clearing that was grass surrounding a glistening lake. Liam and Shay noticed that Akira was in control with the change in our eye colour. I had more of an ocean blue whereas Akira had a more brilliant royal blue.
Within a split second we were greeted by Kora, Shay's wolf, and Alaska, Liam's wolf. Shay was always able to kinda blend in with her surroundings due to her more earthy colourations of her fur. Liam stood out like a sore thumb during the summer months due to his white coat. Me, on the other hand, I stood out like a sore thumb during the winter months when the forest was blanketed in snow. Wolf was a midnight black. There was no other colour to my fur. From the tip of my tail to my snout... just black.
Akira's POV:
I ran circles around Alaska and Kora excitedly. They were excited too for being in control. We wagged our tails uncontrollably as we let out small yips and barks as we played.
Kora and I ganged up on Alaska. We circled him slowly. His eyes darted from Kora to me, trying to anticipate who would leap and attack first.
"Really guys! Yall have been doing this to me since we were pups," Alaska whined and complained through the mind link. Kai laughed through the mind link causing another series of huffs and puffs to come from Alaska.
"And we will continue to do so, pup," Kora said while continuing to stalk closer to him.
"I AM NOT A PUP!"
"You sure do complain like one," Kai responded, further antagonizing the white wolf in front of us. That did it. In a blur of white fur, Alaska lunged forward with an outstretched paw, claws extended hoping to take a swipe at my snout. Yes, he hoped, coz he missed as I dodged his attack by leaping back. At the very same time, Kora leaped onto his back sinking her canines into the scruff of his neck. Hard enough to get a startled yelp from the wolf between her but not enough to cause him any harm. He tried shaking her off but she held on, her grip was too strong. I body slammed into the side of Alaska which sent him and Kora to the ground. Kora released her grip with the impact. With Liam lying on his side still a bit disoriented from the body slam I went over towards him. I placed a firm paw over his head keeping him down while I bit down on his scruff.
"Submit," I commanded through the mind link. He ignored it as always thinking he could get out of this situation and win. He tried clamping his jaws around my ankle but I moved it out of reach. Kora just wanting to annoy him further went and sat on top off him and showed no signs of moving.
Accepting defeat, Alaska stopped snapping at my ankles and showed his neck in submission. Satisfied with the win, Kora removed herself off of him and lied down next to him with her head on her paws. I released his scruff and my paw from his head and gave him a few licks on his head indicating no hard feelings, which he happily accepted and licked my check before laying down on his side. I trotted down to the lake and dipped my head towards its water, lapping up the cool water thirstily. Once satisfied I went back up to where the other 2 lay already sound asleep from the day's activities. Following suite, I laid down and curled up with my tail over my nose and drifted off of to sleep.
I was awoken by Shay gently nuzzling into me. The sun was setting behind the mountains giving the sky a mixture of orange and blue hues. With a big stretch and yawn I stood up and shook my fur out, sending bits of grass flying from my body. I stretched again feeling the tension leave my body.
Kai's POV:
Taking back control from Akira, I looked around for Liam. I spotted him down by the lake and gave a sharp bark to get his attention to head back home. We've been gone the whole day, Elijah said the break would do us some good and honestly, after today I gotta agree with him. Today was fun. It's been a while since the 3 of us got to spend time together. We took off running back home as fast as we could. We were all starving and couldn't wait to shovel some food into our faces.
We arrived at the back of the house and shifted back into our human forms. Our clothes remained intact so we weren't naked. We had some elders in our pack who knew how to use harness the magic all around us. They knew how to weave the magic through the fibers of our clothing allowing it not to rip apart when we shifted into wolves. It came in very handy. I've had to buy tons of new clothes over years by forgetting to remove my clothes before a shift. However, only the alphas, betas and gammas had these special clothing. We didn't have a lot we had just enough the rest were all regular clothing.
Walking through the back door we were immediately bombarded with smell of freshly prepared food. We hurried over to the open plan kitchen/dining and took our designated seats at the table. The other wolves were already seated and awaited for me to take a bite first from my plate out of respect.
Third Person POV
Later that night, Kai lay in bed, arms behind her heard as she stared up at the ceiling. Even after the day out, she was still plagued by her thoughts.
"Akira," Kai called out to her wolf.
"I'm here, pup. What's troubling you?" Akira answered sympathetically as she heard the sadness and worry in Kai's voice.
"I don't think I'm a good alpha."
"Kai, being an alpha is in your blood. In our blood. You lead this pack how the Moon Goddess intended every Alpha to lead. To protect their pack and care for them. But that is not what is worrying you, is it?" Akira said knowing exactly what was troubling Kai.
"What if I never find a mate, Akira? What sort of alpha can I be without my Luna by my side?"
"The Moon Goddess never makes a mistake. Our Luna is out there somewhere."
Kai knew that Akira was right but she still had to whine and complain about it. A wolf without their mate is like macaroni and cheese, batman and robin, and without the other half it's incomplete. An empty feeling takes over.
With a whole in her chest, whole that only her luna could fill, Kai finally closed her eyes and fell into a restless sleep. Tossing and turning as she slept.
