The door creaked open as Zack led me into a dimly lit and somewhat mysterious bedroom. The room had an air of mystique, with its heavy curtains drawn shut, casting long shadows across the wooden floor. A single lamp on a nightstand illuminated a small corner, providing the room with a soft, warm ambiance.

The distant thump of music from the party below was barely audible, creating a hushed and intimate atmosphere. I was just starting to form a question when Zack's hand quickly covered my mouth, causing my eyes to widen in surprise.

"Where is everyone?" James asked, his voice barely audible over the thumping music. I shrugged, feeling somewhat disconnected from the party's energy. The atmosphere was lively, but my mind kept wandering to thoughts of James.

Drawing closer to him, I leaned in and whispered, "Can we get out of here?" His surprise was evident in his eyes. "I thought we were having a good time?" he replied. I raised an eyebrow, and he sighed, relenting, "Alright, let me text the group chat."

We found ourselves outside, the cool night air a refreshing change from the pulsating music within. I looked at James, a sly grin forming on my lips. "Everyone will ask where we went," he mentioned as we strolled along the dimly lit street.

"We won't go far," I assured him with a smile, my eyes sparkling with anticipation.

We continued our walk, the night sky overhead and the distant sounds of the party fading into the background. My phone buzzed, but I paid it no attention.

"Shit," I heard James mutter. I turned to look at him, and he was wiping his nose. "Seriously?" I chuckled, shaking my head in amusement. He gave a sheepish smile, still wiping the slight trickle of blood from his nose. "I drank a little too much," he admitted.

I couldn't help but find it endearing. Cupping his face gently, I helped him stop the bleeding. "It suits you," I commented, causing him to smile even wider. "Gross," he quipped in response, making me smile in return.

As we continued our walk, James asked, "How far are we?" I checked my phone and replied, "Seven minutes." We were only seven minutes away from my house, where I knew I'd be swooning over him in the most wonderful way.

I gazed at the night sky, the stars above us twinkling like distant promises. "Don't you know you're just another heartbreaker?" I questioned Mabel, my words carried away by the wind.

Mabel wore a mischievous smile, the wind whipping at her hair. She leaned against the balcony, her eyes catching the moonlight. "What makes you think that?" she asked.

I leaned over the railing, my eyes fixed on her. "You have people looking at you like that, you're a menace," I replied with a smirk. "And you're French," I added, teasingly.

Mabel burst into laughter. "So?" she responded, clearly amused. I arched an eyebrow. "That automatically makes you more attractive," I explained.

Her laughter continued, and she looked at me with a playful glint in her eyes. "Good to know," she said. "But I've never been in a relationship," she continued, her tone turning more serious. "Or had a lover, or had..." She trailed off, leaving the words unspoken.

Her confession genuinely surprised me. "Are you serious?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.

Mabel nodded, her eyes locked onto mine. "Now, will you tell me about your secret?" she asked. I hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath and finally said, "I was burned."

There was a heavy silence after I had shared my story. "Before my adoptive parents died, there was a fire, and I was the only one who survived. I've been alone ever since," I explained. "My therapist at the time gifted me my first pair of gloves, an inside joke we held, so I've been collecting them since," I continued. I looked at Mabel and offered a small smile. "Why so sad?" I inquired, wondering how she would react.
