JENNIE
It had been weeks since I slapped Lalisa on her face. We haven't had any contact since then and I avoided her looks as much as possible. It was definitely a challenge, but also an absolute must. Over time my heart felt freer and freer. Of course there were days when I longed for her, her indescribable scent, her voice, her closeness but in the end it was probably the best decision for my own well-being.
"And what does our newly adult want to do today?" April grinned at me.
Four, she and I were sitting at our usual spot in the cafeteria. Also, today Friday was my eighteenth birthday.
"I already have a small but nice plan, to be honest." I smiled. Four gripped his water bottle tighter and held up a finger.
"Is there alcohol in it?" His sister, who didn't like drinking herself, slapped herself flat on the forehead.
I laughed, happy to have them both by my side.
"No, not really but-"
"Then your plan sucks!"
The boy threw his bottle loosely in the air. This turned and as fate would have it, landed upright again on the wooden table. The three of us stared at the so-called. perfect 'bottle flip' with open mouths.
"Do you want to fu-?" Before I could get any louder verbally, Four cheered euphorically.
"I am the one."
April couldn't breathe anymore from laughing. My heart soared, without these idiots I would never have been strong enough.
"Uhm, excuse me?" A gentle voice came, a female voice and immediately made the mood sink, like the Titanic.
I hesitantly turned my gaze to the girl and of course it was Lalisa. Curse this girl! The girl with the wonderful brown eyes.
"What do you want?" Four asked coldly. I internally thanked him because my throat was as if constricted.
"Uh, I wanted to give Jennie her notebook back." She hastily put my pink notebook on the table, next to the bottle.
"You forgot it in the literature room."
It was quiet for a while, we just stared at each other. Then I broke the silence and with it the girl.
"Thank you, you can go now." Lalisa nodded, slowly running through the blonde hair and disappeared.
My friends looked at me worried, but I was fine. My leg wasn't shaking, my heart was beating regularly and I was breathing freely. I briefly went through my notebook without saying a word. It was full of drawings, self-written poems and beloved song lyrics. Maybe I was hoping that she would write something in there, some declaration of love or even just a single word, but this wasn't the case. But one page was missing, the sixteenth to be exact. It was carefully torn down. What had I done on that page again? Written or painted something?
"So, what's your plan for today?" April interrupted my thoughts.
I closed the book and smiled.
"A concert!"
"Whose concert?" Four picked up his water bottle again.
"A little band called 'Shine On My Grave'!"
Without giving any further thought to the missing page. I put the notebook in my bag.
"All right!" The twins said as one and one threw the bottle up, this time without success.
"You sucker!" April shouted gleefully. Four crossed his arms.
"Do better!" The girl confidently grabbed the bottle.
"If I can do that, you owe me and Jennie 20 bucks each!"
"Deal!" Her brother snorted.
I hit my lip as she threw it up the pile of plastic. It landed perfectly. We started screaming. The rest of the school certainly thought we were crazy.
"I love you!" I breathed out happily.
"I love you too, you stupid nut!"
