word count: ~890
a/n: this is the nineteenth fic for my advent calendar! i really wish i would have had more time to go on some christmas markets this year. well, maybe next year!
You are walking through a small alley.
Left and right are small little cottages, their roofs coated with a white layer of snow. Everything is lit up with yellow and orange shining fairy lights. It smells like cinnamon, mulled wine and food of different kinds.
You walk through different people, accidentally bumping in a few of them. Here and there are small kids running around you, chasing each other and laughing wholeheartedly.
It brings a smile to your lips.
Happy, you turn around as you come to a small clearing between all the people. Your hand is attached to Rex' and spends both of you some warmth. Smiling, you pull him closer to you, so he's standing right in front of you.
"What do you want to do first?" he asks as he comes to a stop, pulling you a little closer to him.
"Hmmm... What about eating something first? And then we could go back to the soap store. That woman had some cute looking ones!" you say, thinking about that cupcake shaped soap you saw earlier.
Rex nods in agreement. "Sounds good. Can we go and look at those wooden carvings again, after that?" he wants to know. "And what do you think about tarte flambée?" he suggests, and you nod enthusiastically.
Together, you walk over to the small market stall, deciding each for a tarte and waiting together, before standing at a small table next to each other, enjoying your hot food.
"Can I take a bite of yours?" you ask the blonde man. Rex smiles knowingly and nods, "Only when I can try yours, too."
Excited, you exchange your tartes, sighing at the new taste on your tongue, before changing it back.
"Mine's better," Rex thinks out loud after swallowing.
"Yeah, kinda true. But I like mine, too," you agree, nodding.
After you finish your food, you start walking again, holding each other's hands again. You love how his big hand wraps around yours so perfectly, keeping it warm. While you walk, you also start to lean on his shoulder a little bit, enjoying his closeness.
After quite some time, you pass the soap stall again, coming to a halt.
Fascinated, you look around the different soaps, enjoy different smells and talk to the elderly woman.
While you talk, you don't notice how Rex slips his hand out of yours, walking over to a stall next to the one with the soaps.
The kind woman tells you about her family business and how her uncle found it and about her two daughters started to help her out, now that her uncle passed away recently.
Amazed by the woman and the soap, you can't resist and buy a few creations, barely noticing how Rex comes back and holds his thumb up towards the woman.
Questioning, you raise your eyebrow, but Rex just smiles innocently and shrugs his shoulders before grabbing your hand again.
Together, you walk across different stalls, laughing and smiling, paying more attention to the ones you already found interesting the first time you walked through the small Christmas market.
Now and then, the two of you come to a halt in front of one of the small cottages, talk to the people and occasionally buy something.
Rex is particularly interested in a small shop with wooden carvings and asks the owner a few things about his tools and different kinds of woods before deciding that he wouldn't buy anything, much to the seller's disappointment.
As the evening slowly turns into night, you find yourself sitting next to each other on a small bench, a few meters away from the crowded market. You share a cup of hot punch and a sweet crêpe with chocolate and fresh fruits and enjoy each other's company.
Between bites and sips, you smile at each other and exchange quiet words.
"Where did you go earlier?" you ask after the last bite of the delicious food.
Rex looks at you. His cheeks warm up a bit before he starts smiling again.
He shrugs his shoulders again, keeping quiet.
"Come on, don't keep your secrets! They're safe with me!" you try to convince him, but he doesn't relent: "It's a surprise."
A little bit frustrated, you sigh through your nose and start to pout playfully, a little bit annoyed at your own curiosity.
After some more time spent together and a few more things you bought, you feel like your toes and nose are going to fall off because of the cold. Together, you decide to head home and let the evening fade out lazily on the couch, Rex' secret already forgotten.
It's a few weeks later, when you finally learn about his little surprise.
While he got the kind woman to talk to you to distract you, he went off to the jeweler next to the soap stall and bought a necklace for you.
He had already seen it when you walked past the stall the first time. Not only did he know that you would absolutely love it, but he also found it as beautiful as you and couldn't stop imagining you with it. So in the end, it wasn't really a surprise that he took the first opportunity to run over to the stall and buy the piece of jewelry as a Christmas gift for you.
