John Green is an impressive author, no doubt, with many bestsellers such as The Fault in Our Stars or Turtles All the Way Down, all of which have touched the hearts and minds of people all around the world. However, one of his other books was not about drama and romance or bringing light to mental disorders, but a collection of essays he has written over a few years. This book was titled, The Anthropocene Review.

The entirety of the book is a treat in itself and almost impossible to be put down without being told to do so. However, the chapter in focus as of now is the second essay, "Humanity's Temporal Range." John Green discusses how long humans have existed and how Earth will continue on after their extinction due to an apocalypse. While doing so, he also mentions that "for many lifeforms, humanity is the apocalypse." Such life forms mentioned isn't restricted to other animals, but humanity in itself. Despite humans being at the top of the food chain, the species as a whole is self-destructive, taking advantage of others and even ending lives as if it was a common walk in the park. And a walk in the park this was.

The lights switched on. Isabelle stood in front of Lucy, her hands on her hips and a slight frown on her face. Earlier she told the group she was going to the bathroom, but it seems she had other sinister plans. To clarify, going to the bathroom isn't sinister, but kidnapping a friend from high school is.

After the lights lit up, Lucy could make out the rest of the room. Compared to the grand architecture of the Wynn Palace, this room was just a simple break area for employees. There was a circular table in the middle with three foldable chairs positioned around it. The top corner to the left of Lucy had a T.V. hooked up on it. All of the other walls had cabinets and drawers somewhat close to a kitchen. A fridge sat in the far right corner with a microwave on top of it. There was also a door to the right that had a red EXIT sign on the top. No one else was in the room; only Isabelle, Lucy, and the person behind her.

"Isabelle? Hold on. You're working with Ruby?!" Lucy yelled at her "friend," which caused the person behind Lucy to remind her that she had a gun pressed on her spine and lined up to her heart.

"Ruby? Why would she be a part of this?" Isabelle raised an eyebrow. Even if Isabelle was in on the kidnapping, it still felt off for her to do this to the girl she's been friends with for years now. Though somewhat conflicting with herself, she was still set on doing it. Evildoers don't just change so easily after all. Good people, however, are a different story.

"S-she's not...?" Although Ryder knew that Isabelle was the true criminal here, Lucy had still thought her best friend had left her for dead. She let out a shaky sigh, knowing that she was not out of the woods yet as she was a trigger pull away from dying. Still, it was relieving to know that her best friend wasn't willing to sell her off like that.

"Of course not. If she was in on this, that blabbermouth would've spilled this to you. You know how she gets with talking her mouth off. Speaking of talking..." Isabelle pulled out a piece of cloth from her pocket and placed it over Lucy's mouth. As the girl begin to struggle, Isabelle tied the material at the back of Lucy's head. It remained tightly positioned in between Lucy's jaws and made her unable to speak. "There we go... How long until they come and pick her up, babe?" Isabelle looked up at the man behind Lucy.

"Should be about ten minutes. They'll pay us upfront after getting her." The man said clearly, the roughness and low tone of his voice disappearing.

"How are they even gonna get her out of here though? Even if that door over there leads to outside, this is the Wynn Palace." Isabelle sat down on one of the foldable chairs set around the table. The man behind Lucy placed her on one of the chairs as well, tying her wrists and ankles to the chair with zip ties after he does so. She was able to get a good look at him. Isabelle's boyfriend seemed to be one or two years older than the girls. He had brown hair styled into a perm and a slim face. The man also had somewhat of a tall stature and a slightly muscular build to him. Even if he didn't have a gun, the boy most likely could have dealt with any antics Lucy put up. It was a good thing she didn't.
