The return

At 6am on Monday, two hours earlier than the official work day starts, you're in the office assessing the damage: the two plants you've left behind are wilting away, three piles of papers are waiting to be signed or reviewed, which is about the usual amount of work for a week, the window hasn't been opened in at least a few days and someone has made airplanes out of what seems to be Thursday's mission reports. All in all, this just about meets your expectations.

You pour your glass of water over the plants, crack your knuckles and get to work with impossible speed. By the time familiar footsteps are heard in the corridor, at 8 o'clock, you've already finished half a day of work.
Unfortunately, that's only for the past week. You'll need to do a lot of overtime to catch up on the main projects you've been working on. Your favorite one, rewriting the guidelines for determining a mission's rank, is going to be on hold for a while.

Of course you recognize the footsteps and it doesn't surprise you when Kakashi and Obito enter the office but you tense up not sure what he will say and if things are very awkward now. Kakashi is on volume 12 of the series he's been reading (he was on volume 8 when you left), Obito is walking behind him, telling Kakashi about the events of the day, while he is met with "mhm", "oh", "and then?".

"-as I near the finish line, I see him dashing towards me and the next thing I know is that I ran STRAIGHT INTO A WALL. Morning, y/n" Obito places a mug of coffee on your desk. You nod and smile silently so he can continue his story, "I go back after him and all I find is ANOTHER wall. At that point, I give up and just go back at the start to wait for him, so we can set a rematch."

"Why would you set a rematch? Gai won. You didn't even reach the finish line." Kakashi asks without lifting his eyes from the book.

"Because the whole point was to see who's faster, not just win for the sake of it. And I got lost, so we don't know."

"The race only proved who's dumber".
Obito flicks Kakashi's hokage hat off, but Kakashi doesn't react. Instead, he steps over the hat and sits down at the desk, so Obito picks the hat up and puts it back on Kakashi's head.

"You didn't realize you were going the wrong way when you saw Gai coming towards you?", Kakashi closes the book and directs his full attention to Obito. His hands on the table awoke the image of his hands grabbing the table from last week, on each side of your body, panting heavily on your chest. This quick flash makes your heart sink into your stomach but you keep it together, you are a professional and, after all, you knew this sort of thing would happen for a while at least. All of last week, you kept seeing him in random places, buying bread, having ramen with some people, buying flowers, bumping into him as he was hurrying somewhere, and every time it killed you on the inside. You didn't exchange any words, barely any looks, but it still stung badly. So you knew that actually interacting was going to be much worse.

"Pffffsh, NO! I thought Look at this idiot going the wrong way!"

You suppress a chuckle and, for a second, your eyes meet, making your hair stand on end. Neither of you betrays any feeling in that split second and you instantly divert your attention back to the page you've been reading.

"Sorry, y/n, we didn't get much done last week without you", Obito says sheepishly, having noticed you're enthralled in your work after following Kakashi's gaze, "but I did water your plants!"
You look incredulously at the plants who seem to have gone through the driest week of their lives and he clarifies: "So...once wasn't enough?". You shake your head slowly, squinting at him, and mouth a silent no

"I did read a lot last week", Kakashi says on a boastful tone.
You look incredulously at the huge pile of unfinished work on your desk and he clarifies: "so...it doesn't count if it's not work-related?" You shake your head slowly, squinting at him, and mouth no.
His gaze turns from amused to intense and you're the first one to break eye contact, already a little overwhelmed.
You expected it to be hard but not this hard, so you decide to focus on your work as best as you can, not talk unless talked to, not lift your eyes, be as invisible as you can. For your heart's sake.

"Shikamaru summoned us for a quick meeting, should we go?" Obito says.

"Yes"

"Like right now?"

"Mhm"

"And you forgot your head at home today, yes?"

"Yes"

"Kakashi!" Obito screams but then changes his voice to a whisper "stop staring" and then back to normal volume, which for him is pretty close to screaming "Should we get going?"

"Yes! Y/n, you too."
You stand up without looking at them, grab a notebook and a couple of pens and head to the door but you still hear Kakashi whisper to Obito "I wasn't staring, I was just looking".

A circle of five umbrellas stand in heavy rain. You're taking notes while standing under Obito's umbrella, who left half of his face uncovered to make sure you and your paper remain dry. He keeps blinking as the raindrops hit his face and it looks like he's winking at the masked ANBU standing across from him. You don't understand much from their discussion because everything is coded: something about a honeypot and killer bees, the queen bee and a big fire, which you assume is code for a big fire.
When it's over, Shikamaru asks Obito to stay to discuss some details, and you two do a little tug of war for the umbrella. He exchanges a quick glance with Kakashi and you feel his hand on your shoulder. You stiffen, let go and move under Kakashi's umbrella. He's not as generous with his umbrella as Obito, you need to sprint to match his pace, half turned to fit under the umbrella and stay close to not get wet. It drives you nuts every time your bodies bump into each other on the short way back inside, but you also feel so very awkward and hope he understands you're not doing it on purpose.
People hurriedly go back to their offices and all it takes is a brief exchange of looks for you to be all over each other in the next second: hungry mouths clashing with each other, his body glued to yours, your hands around his shoulders, his breath on your neck, your mouth on his ear, your back against a wall, his cold, wet hands all over your body, grabbing, searching. When someone opens a door, a couple of minutes later, it catches you normally walking to the office, the only evidence of what had happened being a cold sensation on your breast in the shape of his hand.
