Mila's POV:
Words couldn't describe how horrible I felt. Scarlett's arms still wrapped around me I felt guilt and regret consuming my thoughts. Scarlett has done nothing other than showing my kindness and probably cared more about me than anybody in the last few weeks and yet I had to snap at her for whatever reason I thought was reasonable at that moment.
I had seen the hurt in her eyes when I told her she's just some random actress. I didn't know why I said it because it's quite the opposite. I love her. I love her characters and I like her as an actress. And with what she's done for me only made me like her more. I had even missed her after our first encounter.
Pulling myself together I let go of the hug deciding I was being dramatic and instead of being my stupid emotional self I should actually change something instead of being a cry-baby. Looking up at Scarlett I opened my mouth to say something not really knowing what exactly, but I got interrupted by Rose running towards us, probably bored after playing on the slide alone for so long, which made me wonder how long I had been crying in Scarlett's arms. I felt guilty for not only bothering Scarlett all the time but also kind of stealing Rose's mom.
I got pulled out of my thoughts by the little girl tugging on the sleeve of my jacket. "Have you been crying? does it still hurt? I'm so sorry Mila!" Seeing the little girl was still concerned about the accident, I crouched down in front of her und put on a huge smile. "No Rosy, everything's fine now. It was just a scratch." Rose's face light up as she saw my smile and turned to Scarlett.
"Are we going Home now?", she asked. "I want to play with my new Barbie!" "Yes, you don't mind us driving Mila home do you, sunshine?", Scarlett asked, and Rose shook her head. "I can show you the Barbie I got if you want!", Rose squealed. "I'd love to see her", I smiled pushing my feelings aside for the moment. I could throw my pity party in my room alone, I don't want to bother them anymore, then I already have.
Rose cheered and took my hand, leading me in the direction of the mall where Scarlett's car must be parked. Scarlett packed her stuff and caught up with us a few seconds later. The whole way was practically Rose babbling about all kinds of stuff, her barbie collection and avengers action figures. as soon as she told me about them, she immediately started chattering about how her mom's Job is saving the world and that she is one of the avengers.
Not gonna lie, it was kinda cute to see the little girl's eyes light up as she described how Scarlett would fight the bad guys with other superheroes. Once we arrived by the car, I gave Scarlett the location of my aunt's apartment and we drove off. I couldn't help but notice the actress' constant glances at me the whole ride. I choose to ignore them and continued my lively conversation with her daughter.
Scarlett's POV:
Since Mila's little outburst her demeanor changed completely. as soon as Rose joined us, she acted like nothing happened. If I didn't know better I would might have actually believed her, the girl was doing an incredible acting job. It was really hard to tell if she was really as happy and carefree as she was talking to rose right now or if it was all just played.
But joking aside it made me actually worry more than before. Maybe acting like everything is alright was some kind of protecting mechanism she developed over time. Either way, holding back emotions is definitely not healthy. Every time I glanced at her she would avoid eye contact and start talking to rose again or just stubbornly ignore me. After some time, I sighed to myself and concentrated on the road.
Once we arrived, I opened the car door and stepped outside. Taking Rose by the hand I followed the teen to the door. "Mila, can I see your room? Pretty please?", my daughter gave the girl her best puppy dog eyes, which seemed to work because Mila let out a sigh and nodded with a weak smile. Rose cheered and went inside after the girl had opened the door and I was quick to follow after her.
The apartment was small but organized and clean, nowhere even a speck of dust. Arriving at Mila's room I took a look around, her room matched the style of the whole apartment, modern furniture, grey and white. I smiled at the few minimalistic posters on the walls which added at least a bit of colour to the rather dully looking room.
Rose jumped on the bed and grabbed a Scarlet Witch plushie. "Mommy look! its Lizzie!", she informed me and I chuckled. I noticed Mila walking to her desk eating a cracker when I remembered that the last thing, we ate was ice cream and that was already a few hours ago. Turning towards her I got an idea;
"Mila sweetheart, would you mind if I use the kitchen? I could cook some dinner for us." I saw the girl hesitate, but she eventually nodded. "I'm not sure if what ingredients we have here though. My aunt still has all the groceries from today's purchase with her" "Thats no problem, I'll find something", I reassured her and made my way in the kitchen. Opening the fridge, I noticed there was indeed not much to work with. In the end I just decided to stick with mac'n'cheese.
Cooking the simple dish, I heard Rose and Mila playing in Mila's room. The girl seemed carefree and lively as ever, nobody would've guesses that she's the same girl who was having a panic attack and crying her eyes out in my arms not even 30 minutes ago.
Once the food was ready, I called out for the two girls, and we ate in silence. The teen seemed more tense than before and excused herself after a few bites to the bathroom. Noticing her change of behaviour, I told rose to continue eating while I check up on Mila real quick. I didn't mean to spy on her but as soon as i got closer to the bathroom door I could hear her muffled voice talking to somebody on the phone clearly stressed.
"...she wants to report you for neglecting me. I know you don't want this, and I don't want it either. what if you lose custody over me?! what will my parents say! If you come home now maybe, you can convince her that you aren't as irresponsible as you seem." My eyes widened as I heard who she was talking to. "It's serious! you can't just leave me hanging what if-", Mila sounded clearly distressed and desperate now. "What if she reports you! what if I get put into foster care!", her voice got lounder clearly upset. "I'm not joking-", I could hear the girl letting out a cry in frustration before I decided it would be the best to go back to eating before I would get caught.
I felt bad for eavesdropping but that call only strengthened my decision in reporting that woman. A few minutes later Mila sat at the table again, eating her mac'n'cheese, well more like moving the pasta around on her plate. Rose was the first to finish and Mila put on a movie for her before sighing and sitting back at the table with me.
"Sweety, we need to talk..."
