You knocked on the conference door, back in your usual attire. "Managers. This is Y/N."
The door opened, and Scaramouche stood in front of you, also in his usual attire. "Get in here."
You sweatdropped, entering behind Scaramouche. Funny how he was all nice in the car, and the moment we're back here, he's rude again.
"Y/N. Please enter."
Upon entering, you noticed that three of the twelve seats that were supposed to be currently filled, were empty. Three managers out? That's unusual.
As far as you knew, not many had the chance to actually talk to a manager, much less work with one. As far as ranking went... It should have been Manager Raiden, then Kusanali, Morax, Nevuliette, Tsarita, Murata, Focalors, Barbatos, Yelan, Scaramouche, Atalus, and last of all, Ragnvirdr.
Currently, out of all of the managers that were actually here, were Raiden, Kusanali, Morax, Nevuliette, Barabtos, Yelan, Scaramouche, Atalus, and Ragnvirdr. Upon catching your eye, Morax nodded in greeting. You could only blink back in greeting.
A little girl sitting on one of the seats hopped off her chair. The little white and green haired girl skipped up to you holding out her hand.
Your eyes looked at the little girl in curiosity. Hmmm I think that's Manager Kusanali. Many say despite her appearance, she's actually the block that's keeping this whole organization together.
"Nice to meet you Y/N! I'm Manager Kusanali, but you can just call me Kusanali!" You looked at the hand that was held out to her, and you smiled, taking it.
"It's nice to meet you, Kusanali."
The little girl giggled, and released your hand, almost skipping to her seat at the end of the table. "Good job with the mission this time, Y/N! This mission has been on the board for quite awhile now!"
You shook your head, a mischievous grin coming to your face. "It's nothing, Kusanali. This is a mission, after all. If it weren't for Manager Scaramouche, then I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to finish this mission myself!" little animated happy flowers can almost be seen dancing around your head. You've been set up Scara! Blame yourself for being so rude~!
Scaramouche could tell what you were doing. He scoffed at your childishness. So you're willing to give me credit eh? She doesn't even know she's digging her own grave! "Thank you for the credit, Ms. Y/N. It is unnecessary."
Internally, you were screaming. Very loudly. Damn it! He took my setup and turned it on me!!! Ughhh... I'm getting you back, you asshole! "Why thank you, Manager Scaramouche!"
The male smirked at you, immediately dropping it, as Morax cleared his throat, gaining everyone's attention. "Y/N, we called you today to talk about the mission, and your rank up. Did you find anything strange about the incident?"
Your annoyed thoughts immediately died down at this question. Your eyebrows creased together. "I... I didn't exactly deem it suspicious when I first thought about it. But now you're asking about it... yes. Twice, I thought it was a little suspicious."
Morax leaned forward. "Oh? Explain?"
You thought about it. "Well... don't you think that there were almost no police at the scene? Yes, on the occasion we do collaborate on things like this with the police, but I don't remember that we were cooperating with them during this whole thing. Not just that, but we have multiple reports describing that Lawrence was quite the filthy rich person. But he doesn't even have 1 million? Isn't that too suspicious?"
Scaramouche considered your words. "That's right. Although I'm not sure about the second part, I do agree with you on the first part. There were too few police at the scene today."
"Not only that... I noticed that three managers are out? Isn't that a little unusual?" You questioned.
Morax nodded. "That's correct. They are all on a mission to investigate, and have some kind of tie with the police."
The purple haired lady sitting farthest away from you narrowed her eyes. You recognized her as No. 1 of the agency; Manager Raiden. "And the absence of the large amount of police this time... do you think this has to do with the fatui?"
Everyone in the room turned silent at that. If you didn't know who the fatui was, you must have been living under a rock. Even the common folk knew who they were. The fatui was famous for turning many politicians into heartless maniacs that would fully support the fatui. Almost all the cases they dealt with were connected to the fatui. The way that they dealt with debts; kill. They took countless children, and turned them into weapons of mass murder and turned animals into test subjects that would turn them into monsters of destruction.
A white and blue tipped haired man sitting a little away from Manager Kusanali shook his head. "It doesn't tie quite right. The police have no reason to collaborate with the fatui at times like this. Not only that, why do we have reports that the fatui have been less and less inactive, while police activity has increased by at least 30%?" That must be Manager Nevuliette.
"Let's all slow down first. Y/N, what did you mean about the 1 million?" the young woman with short blue hair and green eyes. Yelan.
"Well... before he died, and begged me not to kill him like all my usual clients. I do a little scam with all my clients, so I asked him for 1 million, and I would consider sparing his life. Mind you, I have no intention of doing so. LIke I said. You can consider it a scam. But then he said, "I don't have 1 million." I found this a little suspicious at the time, but I didn't really bother with it, so I just killed him."
The room stayed silent at this statement. "So it's true." you heard the dark green and black haired man speak.
Morax looked at him. "What do you mean by this, Atalus?"
Atalus's eyebrows creased together. "There was an unconfirmed report connected to this case about 10-11 years ago. I was investigating the matter as an official matter at the time. It stated that Lawrence had been supporting the fatui. Fully. Meaning, money, test subjects, kidnapped children. Whatever you can think of. Seeing the situation in front of us... the most likely reason why the fatui are so inactive these days is because they have their hands full with test experiments and money. The police's hands are practically tied. Any uncorrupted cop probably can't even arrest or even charge the clients that we send to them because the fatui will just bail them out, or support them in a support case. Anyone who continues to pursue the matter will most likely be bribed or even silenced."
Your hands balled into fists. "And when did these reports come, do you mind enlightening me, Manager Atalus?" Your voice shook, head bowed downwards so you looked at the floor.
Scaramouche eyed you. He knew that what was said next, might make you go insane. Yet, he let the words flow out. If anything were to happen, Morax could step in and help you. Yet... there was another half of him that screamed at him to stand up and interfere.
Atalus noticed your change in mood, yet continued on with your request. "I believe I investigated this matter around early autumn, late summer."
That's when you snapped. That's why your eldest brother and second eldest brother's bodies couldn't be found in the rubble. It wasn't that they were burned so badly that you just couldn't recognize it. It was because they were taken to be experimented on. A wetness in your eyes brought you back to reality. You knew what was coming next, you couldn't stop. "Excuse me, madam, sirs. I'll have to excuse myself." You bowed, and quickly straightened yourself, and ran out of the room, slamming the door behind you.
Scaramouche stared at the door you had just practically slammed shut. Was she... crying? Then he remembered what you had told him.
"I was just 7 at the time. My parents owed that guy a huge sum of money, even after selling the bookstore. Lawrence ended up coming to my parents house the day I turned 8. He told my parents to pay or die."
"Lawrence came personally? That's a surprise."
You nodded. "They ended up killing everyone, and me and my brother were the sole survivor of the incident. We lived on what remained of our house, but Lawrence ended up finding out that me and my brother were still alive. My brother shut me in the refrigerator. One stab in the stomach, and they left. Just before he died, he let me out, and told me to run away. Stay away from the house. No matter what happened, never return to the house. I dragged him into our house into what was left of the yard, and buried him there. That was the same day Manager Morax had found me."
She was 8 at the time of the killings. If the killings had happened when she was 8, and she is 19... a perfect 11 years difference. The killings... that means that there's a chance that some part of her family was taken by the fatui for experimenting. Scaramouche grimaced at the thought. No wonder she suddenly excused herself like that. Being the sole survivor of all that... he took a glance at Raiden. Even I hadn't gone through all of that with the betrayals and abuse from Ei.
Ei cleared her throat, bringing Scaramouche from his thoughts. "Let's do this: Scaramouche and Y/N will further investigate this. Diluc, see if you can dig into what the Fatui is up to. Atalus, Barabatos, and Yelan. Find out what's going on with the police and report back to me. Eliminate anyone that stands in your way. Help the police regain proper footing."
"Yes!"
