CHAPTER TWENTY NINE
- Warmth -

The first thing Cheshire did when she reached the Merry was find the White Rabbit. Though she wasn't sure she believed Nami to have been loyal to the Arlong Pirates, she couldn't hide the fear for her small friend. She couldn't hide that the reality of just how little she knew of Nami was beginning to settle in.

She found White Rabbit slouched at the galley, his small body curled up on the hanging couch with a half eaten plate of garden vegetable laid in front of him. No doubt drugged with some type of sleeping pill.

Cheshire sat next to him before she leant forward, combing her sharp nails through the animal's soft fur. White Rabbit stirred when she laid down behind him, curling her arms tightly around his small body, holding him close to her chest. Her heart pounded in her chest as it often would but she didn't find solace in having Zoro behind her. He was wounded and there was nothing she could do about it.

Things were moving too quickly for her liking. In a matter of a week, she had found a home with people she would've never thought as friends initially. But then, everything slowly began to fall and she was reminded of the dark cloud that watched over her, reminding her of the terrifying target that sat brightly on her back.

She scratched behind White Rabbit's ears, watching his whiskers twitch and his paw reach to push her hand away.

"Thank you for never leaving me," she murmured in his ear, pressing a soft kiss against the back of his head through her mask. At least there was something she knew to be a constant.

Standing up, Cheshire decided to leave White Rabbit to sleep off whatever plagued his body to leave him in a deep slumber. She winced as she rubbed her chest, an evident bruise over her skin from Arlong's powerful kick. Her wrist was red and swollen from his ever increasing grasp and she could still feel his tight grip ghosting her shoulder.

She hadn't even thought of how to approach Luffy. He still hadn't talk to her since Arlong and Nami left, busy nursing his own wounds and regaining his strength.

Her feet guided her silently through the long halls of the Going Merry, finding Luffy's soft voice travelling loudly down the halls. She followed it, deciding it'd be best to talk to him now, rather then later.

Nudging the door to Zoro's recovery room open, she found Luffy sat on the edge of his bed, his hands clasped in his lap and straw hat pushed from his head.

"Hey, Zoro. You sure missed a big fight... those fishmen guys were tough. You would've loved it..." Luffy began awkwardly to his unconscious friend. "And we had a pretty great dinner. All of us sitting around together, listening to Usopp's stories."
