As soon as I finished taking a shower, I ran towards my room, looking down with my towel over me. Suddenly, a hard solid thing knocked me hard. Conrad. His abs, to be exact. Blushing, I glanced up just to see him.
Shirtless, with a towel wrapped around him.
Biting my lip, I hurriedly muttered a quick 'sorry' before rushing into my room, afraid to ever come out. I slammed the door shut and leaned my back against the wooden door frame. Scared to ever talk to Conrad ever again. My breaths came in short sharp pants, and even though I was still wet from the showers, my hands sweated with uneasiness.
After recovering from this traumatizing event of embarrassment, I carefully slipped on a white summer dress, feeling the fabric cinch my waist. Enough of that already! I clasped a beach shell necklace around my neck and fastened a dolphin earring I received for my 15th birthday. I slowly opened my door, peeking out, making sure that no one could see me. gradually, I tiptoed down the stairs to the dining room table before hearing an annoying voice, Jeremiah. oh yeah, he was meant to be my boyfriend. Whoops, it's so hard to remember. He's just too irritating.
"I saved you a seat," Jeremiah said to me, smiling, motioning for me to sit next to him. Was he making the whole 'dating' thing a bit too obvious?
I rolled my eyes slightly before sitting down.
"Steven, I swear to god if you look at that phone one more time I will be putting it in the basket," Laurel warned, glaring at Steven. Suddenly, Jeremiah snatched the phone off Steven, tossing it through the air, and then landed in the screen basket.
"Yesssss, dunk!!!! One goal for Jeremiah, 0 to Steven!!" Jeremiah called out.
"Seriously?" Steven groaned, annoyed.
"You're just jealous, Jere has a better body than you." Belly laughed, shaking her head.
"Well actually, it's all about the lean look now, or else you can't wear tailored suits." Steven shot back, grinning.
Susannah chuckled softly, covering her mouth with her palm to engulf her laughter.
"Tailored, suits." Conrad chuckled under his breath. We all burst out laughing.
"So Con, how's football?" I asked him. Then the atmosphere seemed to go tense.
"Uh. I quit," he answered, not avoiding my gaze.
"He can always start again if he wants to," Susannah started, but Conrad cut her off.
"I'm not going to."
I nodded slowly and continued to eat my food.
"Oh! That reminds me! I have these for you girls!" Susannah smiled, looking at me and Belly. We exchanged confused looks. "I have invitations to the debutante ball for the two of you! It's when a girl comes of age and is presented to society: as an event that's more fun than it sounds. Girls come from all over and it's a good place for you guys to meet new friends around the same age as you!" she announced, handing Belly and me an invite. The piece of card had flowing floral imprints and was white, almost like a wedding invitation. "Mature? Belly?" Steven laughed, not believing it. Susannah nodded.
"Yes!"
"Mature? Y/N?" Jeremiah chuckled as he high-fived Steven. I rolled my eyes, "I want to do it." Susannah's eyes lit up. "Perfect!" I glanced at my mother and she just grinned as if she was glad I said yes. "Come on Belly! Let's do it together!" I begged.
"I don't think it's Belly's thing.." Laurel started.
"Oh come on Laur! Let her try something new!!" my mom said, still smiling.
"I'll think about it." Belly declared as Susannah clapped her hands together happily.
