Summer, 1992; The Face of Lord Voldemort
It was Professor Quirrel.
"You?!" Harry spat, shocked that their timid and trembling deference against the arts teacher was standing there before them; a sickly, grin plastered to his sullen and malicious face.
"Me?" Quirrel said calmly, his voice low and without a stutter insight. "I wondered whether I would be meeting you here Potter, oh and it seems your brought a friend" he smiled, his eyes landing on her. Ember glared at him, pushing herself in front of Harry.
"How dare you!" She scowled. "How dare you betray Dumbledore like this!"
Quirrel laughed, it made Ember sick to her bone. "That old fool?" He chuckled. "Dumbledore never suspected a thing, why he even believed that old, note I sent him saying that he was needed at the ministry. Leaving Hogwarts to my own means."
"I thought it was Snape -"
"Severus? Ah, yes he does seem quite the type. Next to him, who would suspect p-p-poor st-stuttering P-Professor Quirrel?"
Ember didn't know her defence against the arts teacher well, but she still felt the betrayal to know that their teacher had been lying to them the whole time.
"But Snape tried to kill me."
"No boy! I tried to kill you. If it hadn't been for Snape's robes catching fire which diverted my attention, I would have succeeded! Even with Snape muttering his little counter curse" Quirrell spat and realisation hit the two first years.
"Snape tried to save me?" Harry gasped, and for a moment Ember's heart did a little jump. Snape was innocent...in fact, he'd been trying to help them. There were so many thoughts and revelations right now, that Ember didn't know what to think. All she knew was that she was extremely hot, like something might burst.
"I knew you were a danger to me right from the off. Especially, after Halloween" Quirrell frowned and Ember thought back to when they'd fought the troll all those months ago.
"So you let the troll in!" She exclaimed incredulously. That bloody creature had almost smacked her head off, she wasn't letting this go lightly
"Yes, my dear girl, how very clever of you" Quirrel smirked, his eyes darting towards her. "Snape wasn't fooled though and after that night he never trusted me again. He wouldn't leave me alone...but he doesn't understand. I am never alone."
Quirrel smiled wickedly, turning his back to them to face the mirror. Harry and Ember looked at each other nervously. Ember didn't know what he meant, but this fire bubbling inside her was getting hotter and hotter as if in warning. In that moment, Ember knew they were in much deeper trouble than they realised.
"Now, what does this mirror do?" Quirrel muttered, his attention diverted. Harry groaned, rubbing his head.
"Harry, what's wrong?" Ember frowned, placing a hand on his arm. The boy winced and pinched his eyes shut, but managed to get out a few words.
"I dunno, my scar -"
The two of them froze as a cold wind flew in through the chamber. Ember had no idea where it came from and her skin began to crawl when she heard an unfamiliar voice hiss into the dark chamber.
"Dispose of the other."
The voice was cold and dark and sounded much like a snake as it echoed off the stone walls. Ember flicked her head up to see Quirrel spin around, wand out and pointed at her. He muttered some sort of foreign incantations before she felt herself be pulled off the ground and flung back.
