Dru felt weightless when she lay in the bed that they had given her. The covers were huge and so soft that she couldn't believe that something so amazing could exist. She slipped in underneath the cover and felt her muscles aching from the amount of movement she made that day. She felt the stabbing pain in her side every time she breathed in and her knuckles were so tender that every time she brushed them on the duvet they would ache. For the first time in ages, it didn't hurt to lay her head down on a pillow because her hair was clean for the first time in ages. Her hair was so matted and stiff that she couldn't even lay down without it hurting, but now, she felt like she was in heaven. She raised her hand and brushed it over the small puncture hole in her chest from where the tube resided in. It helped her to breathe and she wished that she still had it. It didn't hurt when she breathed. She got out of the bed when she heard footsteps coming down the hall and quickly smoothed the covers out. She stood up just as her mother came in bearing a fruit platter. Dru had never seen so many colours in the one place before.
"I thought that you would be hungry, given that you've only been eating hospital food for the last couple of months." She said, resting the plate on the desk. She brushed her hands on her jeans again, a habit that she had developed over the years, and finally looked at her daughter. She was terribly small for her age, and her some of her bones stuck out in her wrists and her collarbones were prominently outlined under her skin.
Dru looked at the platter; red, orange, green, blue... All the colours that she could imagine were there. She picked up the triangle shaped red fruit, which she gathered was a watermelon, and took a bite. It was the most watery thing that she had ever had, and it dribbled all down her chin and onto her shirt. She didn't seem to care, so her mother quickly picked up a napkin and slowly dabbed at her face. She took her time, cherishing the moments she had with her daughter.
Then - she couldn't help herself- she dropped the napkin and quickly wrapped her arms around the girl. She was startled and terrified. At first she thought that she was attacking her, so she dropped the watermelon in a scare. But a few seconds went by and the woman didn't make any move to do anything other than stand there. Dru savoured the feeling of her body; it was very warm and soft, something that a mother should feel like. She felt her heartbeat against her chest; it was rapidly beating and she didn't like it. Slowly, but surely, Dru repeated her actions and hugged her back, which seemed to visibly relax the mother. Her heartbeat slowed down as she buried her face into the crook of Dru's small neck, and Dru did the same. She didn't know what was going on, but she sure as hell liked it a lot. She could do this all day; just stand and hug this woman, and Sarah could do it as well, but Dru's foot was hurting from holding all of her weight, so she pulled away. Sarah's cheeks were damp and her eyes were red, but she still had a smile on her face. This always confused Dru, she didn't understand how someone could cry and smile at the same time.
"I'm sorry." Sarah smiled, sniffling as she wiped her cheeks. Dru picked up the watermelon she dropped and brought it to her lips again, but Sarah quickly took it from it. "Don't eat that sweetie, it fell on the ground." She threw into the trash can under the desk and handed her a new piece. "Eat this one, it's not dirty."
Dru took the piece gratefully and sat on the chair, where the two both ate the pieces in silence, enjoying the moment.
