Revised.
At first, Dru's parents didn't believe the two investigators when they showed up at their door. They even got angry, slamming the door on them. But they soon realized that it must have been true, because people wouldn't have tracked them down all the way from Sydney to Melbourne for some cruel prank. After they broke down in happiness, they booked the first flight to Sydney. Dru was still bed ridden, but they didn't care. They needed to be with their child that they hadn't seen in 14 years.
It had been almost three weeks since she was admitted into the hospital, but the bills were just piling against her. Luckily, the two ringleaders of the notorious trade that they created throughout their lives had accumulated lots and lots of money, to which they had to disperse to the women who earned it through the work they did. This meant that their base was found, and all the girls were seized and put into the foster care system.
Dru's parents were in the airport when Dru had finally gotten out of her bed for the very first time since she was admitted, besides the times she had to have a shower. Her bad leg felt numb and strips of pain shot up her torso every so often, and her good leg just felt numb. Melinda had underwent some exercises for her leg while she lay in her bed, moving it up and down and side to side so it wouldn't fall asleep and potentially die off from not being used. Melinda gently helped her into the wheelchair and put her broken leg up onto the leg rest. She couldn't use crutches because she wasn't strong enough to carry herself and the weight of the cast. Not the mention her hand also had a cast on it.
"How do you feel?" She asked, looking down at her in concern. She looked at the funny contraption she sat in; she remembered seeing a man in one of these leaving one her sister's room one day, back at the base house. Dru nodded in response, leaving Melinda to piece her response together herself.
"Let's go on a tour around the hospital, okay? I'll push you." She offered, and without a response from Dru, she walked behind her and began to push her towards the door. Dru felt her heart beat rise as her casted foot pushed the door open to the outside world. She didn't know what she expected; where she used to live, everything was dark and every single window was boarded with duct tape and bars. The wallpaper was a very dark wine red that looked black, and the carpet was also fluffy dark red colour. She despised the colour red.
The hospital corridor was exactly the opposite; the floors, walls and ceilings were all an eye-watering white and she could almost see herself in the floor's reflection. Nurses and doctors walked up, all sneaking glances at the infamous girl from room 14. She had to move rooms because she didn't need intensive care anymore, although she had grown a liking to her new room. As she was wheeled down the corridor, every time a man looked at her in concern she wriggled deeper into her seat, avoiding eye contact with them. Her hands gripped her thighs tightly and Melinda seemed to notice the connection. She turned into the cafeteria and gave her a short tour and told her of some regulars around the hospital and other nurses and doctors. Dru couldn't care less but she like the atmosphere in the hospital.
Surprisingly, standing in line to pay for his food, there were two young boys by the names of Luke and Calum, who were there to visit Calum's grandmother after her operation to remove a benign tumor. Luke stabbed Calum in his ribs with her elbow and motioned over to the girl, where Calum's eyes widened after a brief wounded moment.
"Holy shit, that's the girl, isn't it?" He said, watching as she looked around the cafeteria. Dru's eyes wandered over to the two boys, and she recognised them from her moment of weakness. She immediately snapped her head ahead of her, her free hand gripping her thigh so hard that the skin around it went white and she left a red imprint of her hand. Melinda looked down at her and frowned in concern. She stopped pushing and crouched down in front of her, looking up at the terrified young girl.
"Are you okay, Dru? You're safe here, you know. Nothing can hurt you here, look," Melinda pointed at the security guards by the doors. They didn't have guns, but they did have tasers, which was better than nothing. She felt a lot better knowing this, and even more so that the guards were women. Although she didn't believe that she was safe, she did feel a little relaxed.
"Those boys over there visited me. Do you remember? I vomited all over you." She said bluntly, and the corners of Melinda's lips tugged upwards. She looked over at the boys who were holding up the line as they stared at the girl. When they caught the attention of both women, Luke raised his hand and waved at them. Melinda frowned and turned back to Dru.
"They rescued you, didn't they?" She asked, and Dru shrugged her shoulders.
"So they say. You can never be sure." She responded, and Melinda shook her head.
"No, Dru. They did save you, I remember them coming in and talking to you. I confirmed with the police after they left." She said, and Dru looked at her in a funny way. "I think you should meet them, don't you?"
In that instant, she quickly shook her head so violently that she almost gave herself a headache. But before either one of them could make a decision, Luke and Calum had arrived at their destination and greeted the two girls.
"Hey, I don't think you remember us, but we visited you the other week. How are you doing?" Calum asked, his grip on his bowl of soup tightening as Melinda stared him down.
She didn't respond, even with the encouragement of Melinda. She finally sighed, which Dru felt immensely bad for, and she gripped the handles of the wheelchair and smiled at the two boys.
"Thank you for saving her, she is very grateful for it." Melinda said with a smile, and quickly leaned over to the boys so Dru wouldn't hear what she said. "She's moving to room 217 on the fourth floor, if you ever want to pay her a visit."
The two boys looked at each other before nodding, and big goodbye to them. Melinda walked off with Dru, and she stole a quick glance behind her at the two boys, who talked among themselves.
