(Revised)
One ambulance and two police cars arrived at the scene. Ashton had his hands under her head so she would be slightly more comfortable, but then removed them once the paramedics came over holding their large red bags. They were escorted away and in a moment the area was cornered off and the tiny amounts of traffic were redirected away. Because the van was smoking, a fire truck also pulled up and quickly extinguished the could-be blaze caused by the smoke emitting from the hood. Two police officers took the group of friends by one of the patrol cars while the other two were inspecting the flipped van. The only immediate source of light were from their blinding flashlights that were attached to their vests. Luke's palms were sweaty even though the night had a cool breeze.
"So if you could just tell us your names and contact details, then we'll grab the statements off of you about what you saw." Officer Cox had said, both him and his partner holding clipboards that contained witness sheets. One by one, each of them recalled their names and their own account of what had happened a mere 20 minutes ago. They waited for what seemed like a lifetime with the girl for the ambulance.
"The two guys driving the van ran off that way, but they're probably gone by now." Calum explained, pointing in the general direction of where they disappeared to. Luke didn't see where they ran off to because his view was obscured by the van. Both of their heads automatically looked in the direction of where he pointed, and wrote down the street name that correlated with Calum's comment.
"What did they look like?" Cox asked, looking up at Luke. The other officer was taking Ashtons' and Calums' statements, and Cox was taking Michaels' and Luke's. The two officers stood together, separately taking each comment that left their mouths, even though they were exactly the same.
"Very big builds like body builders. They were wearing those ski masks and one of them had a handgun, like yours." He replied, watching the red and blue lights flash across his aged face. He looked too old and too tired to be in this line of work, but he had a few stars and medallions lined on his breast pocket, so he guessed that he was good and proud of his job. His eyes didn't glance down at the gun held by his hip like Luke's and Michael's did. He just kept writing quickly in scribbles that only he could understand.
"Thanks, boys. We'll make contact in the next few days just to see how you are. Witnessing a car accident is a very traumatising experience." He comforted, but Luke frowned at him. Michael beat him to the punch as he literally took a step back.
"This wasn't an accident. It was a hit and run. Those two men pummeled into that girl on purpose." He said forcefully, but backed down when he saw the man's cold eyes stare into his own.
"You said the driver lost control of the car." He shot back, looking back through his notes. Michael stumbled, and looked down at his hands.
"Well yeah, he did. But he obviously didn't care about her. They just left her in the street to die!" He argued, and the officer nodded and calmed Michael down.
"No need to shout, son. I understand that this is tough. Your parents are on their way to pick you up, okay? Just wait here and we'll have a look around." He said, and the two walked away to the van and tire marks and started to take pictures with their other friends. Luke leaned on the car, physically shaking from the confrontation. None of them will never get over this.
Finally, after attaching an oxygen mask, an IV drip and a neck brace for the girl, she was lifted onto the stretcher and pushed into the ambulance. The paramedics jumped inside and sounded the sirens as they raced off towards the hospital. Luke wondered what his mum would say to him when she arrived to pick him up.
Michael's mum came first, since he was the one who lived the closest, and they bid goodbye to him. Ashton drove Calum and himself home since he was the designated driver. Luke was left standing next to the police car as he stared at the spot where the girl had been left. There was fresh blood sparkling in the light from the overhead lamp. The pool of blood was so big, he was surprised she was still breathing.
It didn't take his mum long to come get him, since she was at her friend's house who lived right next to Michael. She ran over to him, her handbag swinging in the pit of her elbow and she wrapped her arms around him tightly. He hugged her back, the shaking subsiding temporarily as he felt her warmth. He towered over her, so she fit nicely just under his chin.
"Come on, love." She muttered, wrapping her arm around his waist and holding him close as they walked back to the car.
