It took more than three days for Chua to widen that gap up. Despite of the rat's brags, once he started working on it, he realized in dismay that the wall bricks were harder and tougher than he expected. He had to use all four paws, claws and a set of teeth to clear the crack bit by bit. He slept during the day and worked very hard at night.
Chua explores Bungalow through an age-old pipeline system
While he was working, Rikki stuck to his plan and patrolled the garden whenever he's awake. Darzee's wife helped him in the early morning and during noon (when Rikki usually took short naps). Coppersmith offered him help eagerly as well, though his main purpose was to take more peeks at the newly arrived pet lovebird Mira, who spent most of the time standing near the window sill and preening herself.
Occasionally, when Teddy's bedroom window was slightly open, Coppersmith and Darzee's wife went to befriend with Mira in turns. It turned out, at least for them, that Mira was a rather well mannered and domesticated bird. She also appeared cheerful and spoke in a gentle tone. It did not take long for both birds to like her. Since she was a house pet bird, Mira seldom flew outside of the house, unless she was accompanied by her master - Teddy's Uncle Jeff. She kept imploring Darzee's wife to deliver messages to Rikki that Teddy was all well and she was looking after him. Rikki began having good feelings about this newly arrived lovebird too, even though he was almost fully engaged in other matters.
On the early morning of the fourth day, both Darzee's wife and Coppersmith flew to the bungalow. Their shifts overlapped. Therefore, while coppersmith patrolled the garden, Darzee's wife chose to perch on a window sill and eavesdropped a short conversation between Teddy's grand aunty and uncle. What she heard and learned surprised her a great deal.
The living room Uncle Jeff and Aunty had a conversation in
"Jeff, I know you and your brother are - I mean, were not on any good terms," cried Aunty, who felt heart-broken to use past tense to address Teddy's father, "even after the whole family went against you a couple of years ago. Yet you still choose to come back and offer kind help. You must have a wonderful change of heart! I believe I thought wrongly of you."
