"Waves" by Dean Lewis
"Hello again!"
"I don't want to talk to you."
"Why not? It's only the two of us." He starts singing, "just the two of us, we can make it if we try."
"Why are you like this? You're so happy. I'm sure your life is perfect. No problems for you."
"You should really stop asking questions but since you asked, no. I have my ups and downs like everyone else. I been through things that I rather not share."
I didn't say anything after that. I was wrong and I knew it.
"I'm sorry."
"You're okay. Everyone feels like that at some point. . . I'm guessing you don't know who I am and that's cool."
"You're a somebody?"
He looks down at me and smiles.
"Oh, a question again, sorry."
"I think if you embrace this, the moment we share can last longer."
-----------------
Another morning, another day. I lay in my bed and stare at the ceiling. Same repeated day, only difference is that I have a family reunion. I'm not so close to my family. It's kind of awkward. We're a very distance family and rarely speak with each other. I believe these reunions we have is to make it seem like we're a close family, when we're truly not.
People speak about each other and then act as if they weren't. They use me for babysitting and its always last minute. They don't always pay me and if they do, it's unfair. I don't speak up for myself and just move past the situation. I don't really get help. I get told what I should do and no listens when I do say what I want. I just learn to not speak.
-----------------
"How was your day?"
"The same."
"Missing something?"
"Just feeling empty, like something is missing, yes."
"I completely understand. I'm missing home back in Australia. I feel comforted hearing the accents thanks to my mate, Felix."
"You're from Australia?"
"Yeah and, hearing the accents inside songs makes me feel comfortable and makes me feel at home. Languages itself makes you feel like you're in a certain place."
"I should've known by your accent, but I'm all wrapped up inside my own head to notice."
"It's ok, I mean wouldn't have been bothered if you did or didn't. I would've only questioned how you never noticed the accent." He chuckled.
"Your voice, it's comforting though. When you speak and when you sing, I wouldn't be surprised if you were a singer."
"Haha, um. . ."
"Are you into stories?"
"Yes, you got one?" He squats down beside me.
"It's the story of the Sun and the Moon." He shakes his head in anticipation.
"Okay, the story of how the Sun loved the Moon so much that he dies every night for her begins with the moon. The Moon was so beautiful that only the stars could fathom. The sun could not see for he was always on the other side. The Sun, he burns bright lighting everything in his path."
The moon wrapped in a blanket of darkness; he would've given anything to see her. One day, when the Sun was sliding out of the heavens, he caught a glimpse of her. A rare side of her was exposed to light. As the Sun shone, he knew the Moon could glow. He fell in love with her."
He wished he could see her longer than the little moments they shared at dusk and dawn. "Go", She whispered to him, "go and let me breathe, for you and I have decided fates. You illuminate the day, and I cast a glow on the night. We'll never be. Our connection would go against what people believe." So, during the summer, he would stay a little longer just in hopes that she would change her mind. She never did. She told him, "Don't you dare abandon your blessing of light for my darkness." The words she spoke were the last she told to the Sun. It was clear to him, that he would die every night to let his true love breathe."
"Wow. That's so sad. They never get to be together."
"Expect for an eclipse, but that how life is for them. Like the Moon said, they have decided fate. They won't forget each other because for them to work, they need to be apart. They depend on each other for life."
"I have another rendition of the sun and the moon story and would love to know what you think of it." He states.
