- "Okay, so it's not only vampires? That is why Alin kept on asking me what I am?" - Milo asked Petr when they were still waiting for Damien to come back to Prague.
- "Yes. There are all sorts of creatures on Earth, Milo, but we all try to keep to ourselves. Humans tend to destroy what they fear, so showing ourselves would very likely mean war. So that is why we hypnotize you and the others, so you won't see our fangs nor pay attention to the fact we don't eat. I'm sorry we had to deceive you."
Milo nodded, biting the inside of his cheek. That was still burning inside of him, that feeling of betrayal and confusion. He suspected that was the reason for Petr to allow him to ask that many questions.
- "And how long have you been a vampire?"
- "Me? Well... I'm not sure. I think two or three hundred years, now. I never really cared to keep track." - Petr smiled, sitting next to Milo on his bed. - "But I know what you actually meant to ask was about Damien. As far as I remember, we were turned around the same year, but he's older than me."
Milo blushed when Petr began talking about Damien. Even though that was not the reason for his question in the first place, that was indeed in his mind.
- "So you used to be human? Both of you?"
- "Yes. I used to live in the Kingdom of Denmark when Duke found me near death after a battle. He said that he liked how I fought and would be useful for the coven, so he chose to turn me that day. Unfortunately for him, I hate fighting."
- "This Duke guy. Mihai was terrified of him. Who is he?" - Milo looked at Petr through his peripheral vision. He was afraid of that answer for some reason.
- "Well, I guess you figured Damien and I are not related. None of us are but living together because it makes things... easier. For the most part. There are six of us right now: Damien, I, Joseph, Andrej, Matthew, and Duke." - Petr paused as he seemingly tried to organize his thoughts. - "If all of us opt to live through different rules, one can seriously harm one another's business and goals. Or flat-out fight. So every coven has a leader-"
- "Which is Duke." - Milo interrupted him as the concepts began making sense in his mind.
- "Exactly. The humans know him to be our uncle, but he's just an asshole who turned us into vampires. And yes, he can be... Ruthless, at times. And rude. And overall a terrible person. But he's powerful enough that usually, no problems come our way. The other covens already know who they're dealing with." - Petr chuckled.
- "Don't you mind it? I mean, being turned against your will and now being a vampire? Under the leadership of an unhinged man?" - Milo probed.
- "I did. Right after I turned, it was hard to grasp it since I also didn't know what it meant. Eating the first time... Man, it was gross. And Duke wasn't patient. But I got used to it and learned to accept it. There was no other way other than to make the best of what I got."
It felt reassuring to see how lightly Petr saw the whole ordeal. Becoming a vampire was just another curveball that life had thrown his way, and he did seem to make the most out of it. Made Milo wonder.
- "Petr, why don't you or Damien just turn me? This way, I can be with you. I doubt Damien will want anything to do with me when he continues to look the same and I'm this crinkly old man."
Petr took a deep breath for the first time during that conversation. For a second, Milo questioned if maybe they didn't want to spend the whole eternity near him, or if he was just being too naïve.
