The door opened abruptly and before Sage could say anything a beautiful girl with the softest blonde hair entered the room. At first, the girl did not see Sage and entered with a bag dangling from her right hand and her keys in her left. She placed her keys and bag on the kitchen in the corner before turning around.
When the girl finally looked up, she made eye contact with Sage and her face instantly lit up. The girl had the brightest smile that reached all the way to her piercing blue eyes. Her smile and appearance had a sort of aura that melts anyone found in her presence.
"Hi there, you must be my roommate," the girls said, walking towards Sage. The brunette smiled back and said, "Sage, it's a pleasure to meet you..." the blonde replied back abruptly, "My name's Maeve but most people call me Evie."
She reached her hand out to shake Sage's. As she got closer, her scent filled the room. She was a breath of fresh air that radiated a sort of kindness. As she ran a hand through her hair, she was smiling at her new roommate.
Evie turned her head from the blonde to the decorated side of the room. Her eyes landed on the beautiful bouquet of sunflowers on her bed side table.
Walking towards the table, she admired the freshly bloomed sunflowers that gave off a soft scent. Realizing a note attached to them, she quickly grabbed it and her expression widened. When she finished reading it to herself she laughed and placed the note down walking to her bed.
"A welcoming gift?" Sage questioned sitting on her plain side of the room unpacking some more pillows for her bed. Shaking her head with disgust she answered, "No just another, "I'm sorry, I fucked up" present" smiling to herself. She cringed a little as she stared back at the bouquet.
"Relationships are too much of a headache" Sage said looking at the flowers again, "you're better off on your own".
The blonde shook her head, "Oh no honey, who hurt you?" she said in a joking manner, starting to giggle. Sage responded with a laugh shaking her head.
She was never one to talk much about her past. It was there for a reason. Besides, she had to remember where she was. She was no longer at "sweet home Arizona," but at the big apple which means it's time to start fresh.
"What are you majoring in?" Sage asked, changing the topic. Taking a seat on her bed, Evie looked around her bright side of the room, "Isn't it obvious."
Sage chuckled while she finished putting the pillows on her bed. Once she finished, she sat across from the blonde looking around her room. Pondering for a moment she took it all in. "Interior designer?" Evie looked at her shaking her head. "Psych?" Sage guessed looking at the paintings. "Am I really that hard to see through?" Evie giggled.
"A painter?" sage said with a smile on her face. Evie fell back on her bed letting out a sigh, "Oh how i wish," she smiled thinking for a brief moment then shook her head. "I'm going into business."
Sage let out a laugh gleaming from ear to ear. "How dumb could I be, it was so obvious".
Evie sat up crossing her legs on the bed and pulled a pillow on her lap. "What about you? What are you majoring in?"
"Guess," Sage said in a joking manner. Evie only shook her head. "Photography?" she asked while Sage opened another box laying beside her bed.
Evie closely watched as Sage unboxed a small camera that had stickers bordering the rims. Sage walked towards her with the camera in hand.
"Oh my god, I'm obsessed!" Evie said, reaching out to get the camera. Sage hesitantly placed it in her hand, "Be careful, I've had it for years and don't plan on losing it now to some stranger".
Evie examined the camera in her hands and traced the round ends of the lens. "Yet, you're the one moving in with said stranger." Sage rolled her eyes while remaining on her feet as Evie looked at her camera. "I love the stickers, it adds life to this boring old thing."
"Hey! It's not boring or old," Sage said, yanking the camera out of Evie's hand. "It's vintage," Evie said in reply. Rolling her eyes, Sage placed the camera on her night stand. "My mom decorated it," she said smiling as she sat on her side of the room.
Evie let go of the pillow and moved herself to Sage's bed, "Sorry." She pulled herself onto the bed and sat close to Sage. "I didn't mean old in a bad way but more that it has history" she said smiling. Sage only giggled, "My dad gave it to her." Evie pouted her lip as she laid down on Sage's bed, "Parents can be so cute sometimes. My dad bought my mom a vinyl with Elvis Presley's signature on it once. My mom nearly died. She spent weeks trying to buy him something that even came close and all he would say was that he just wanted her".
Sage gave a small smile but just wanted the conversation to change. She didn't want to talk about her family cause there wasn't much to talk about. Her mom was the only person in the picture and that was fine with her. The more she thought about it, the more she wanted to run back to Arizona with her mom. She felt guilty for leaving her alone and scared for what could happen when she wasn't around. But Sage knew it was for the best. She knew all she had to do was open that camera and her mom would be there like she always was. That camera didn't represent a partner's love but a mother's love. It's the kind of love where your mom would do anything for you and that's what I had with my mom. She was my best friend.
Sage made a throw up expression moving herself away from Evie. "I think I'd rather die than continue this conversation". Evie's jaw dropped, "What's the matter with you and love?" she said moving closer to her.
"Nothing, I just don't believe in it," Sage said, unboxing another box to end the conversation. "I have to continue unpacking it's going to be late". She kept unpacking, taking her things out of the box one at a time with her back turned to Evie. Evie looked at Sage's back and sighed while grabbing her keys from the kitchen counter, "You're going to fall in love with love, just wait." Evie walked to the door but turned around at the last second to face sage. "And I can't wait to see it happen," she said before closing the door behind her.
Sage ignored the now unwanted guest as she rushed to put her stuff away as quickly as possible. Pillows, bed sheets, blankets, she put them on and quickly laid on the bed. Closing her eyes she fell asleep.
