dear wooyoung

he hummed.

he hummed a quiet rhythm as he wrote on the blank card, letting the ink of his pen carry his thoughts and feelings to the empty spaces.
his leg shook, creating small taps on the floor.
he eventually stopped writing and placed the letter in its envelope, licked the envelope sealed and carefully placed it in a bag, along with a gift, wrapped in red and white paper and silver ribbon.

~

his heart beat faster than ever before, as he approached wooyoung with a smile; as the other was filming the sky.

wooyoung jumped, scared by the sudden contact and sighed of relief.
"sani! you can't just sneak up on me like that!" he laughed, "what's in the bag?"

san held out the bag in front of him, gesturing for wooyoung to take it.
wooyoung, who had now been filming san's face, caught in a trance, snapped back to reality and put his camcorder down.

he looked inside the bag with anticipation, only to find a card and a gift inside.
"oh my god, san..." he felt himself tearing up in awe at the older. this is definitely his love language.

over the last few days they had been hanging out with one another, san had always brought something for him; whether it was a paper ring or an expensive piece of jewellery, he always had something for the other. he always delivered the item with smile and care, and always smiled when he had seen wooyoung's reaction.

wooyoung set the bag down beside him and opened up the card, being careful not to destroy the envelope too much, and slided it out.
on the front had a child-like drawing of wooyoung and san together, wooyoung holding a camcorder as san is shown skating on the ice.
a tear rolled down wooyoung's cheek and his heart pumped out of his stomach rapidly as he stared at the card, completely in love.
he opened the card, and his eyes slowly began to scan through the heartfelt message spread across it.

the words read :

dear wooyoung, thank you for showing me what a real friend feels like this winter. you have been the lovliest boy i have ever met. i've been observing you. you love gifts. remember when i gave you my button from my shirt and you hugged me?
i felt something there.
something unexpected.
it all feels so sudden i don't what i can do with myself anymore.
anyway, enjoy this gift i prepared for you with all my heart.
- your sani, forever

wooyoung made an attempt to fight back the tears, closing the card and clutching it to his chest.
never before had he felt this loved, by somebody.

he placed the card gently back into the bag, and pulled out the gift.
it was wrapped so carefully, tied with a silvery ribbon.
he untied the ribbon between his fingertips, and gently unwrapped the box.

it was a polaroid camera, in a blueish- grey colour.

"got the grey because it reminds me of this season, when we met a month ago." san remarked with a dear smile.

he put the box back in the bag, and pulled san in for a tight embrace, holding him ever so dearly. they stayed like that for a few long moments, which could have lasted forever.
wooyoung no longer fought back the tears, letting them fall like rainpour.

as they pulled away from the hug, wooyoung smiled greatfully at san, grabbing his new camera.
he unboxed it, holding it carefully, adding the film and ensuring everything works.

in the box, he found a used polaroid, with a heart drawn on the back. he flipped it over in his hand and saw san, posing to the camera as if he was blowing a kiss.

wooyoung giggled and grabbed san, snapping a first picture together.

a love he had never felt like this before, finally bloomed.

~

wooyoung had an eventful walk home, taking one picture of the cold night sky and the snowfall, ensuring he doesn't waste all of the film at once.

the sounds of the snow crunching under his feet was music to his ears as he switched to his camcorder, recording his little steps.
a black cat ran over to him; oddly reminding him of the boy; and brushed up against his leg.
he petted the cat lovingly, capturing every moment.

people walking by gave him strange looks, as if to say "why is he filming a cat..?" but didn't mention anything.
once he looked around noticed the people's judgeful glances, he stood up and left the cat, who had already disappeared from wooyoung's sight.
he thought it was strange the cat had been gone in a blink of an eye, but he paid no mind to it as he continued his journey home.

~

"we can't bring it up now, let's wait until after christmas, honey."
"he needs to know now! we can't let him live like this forev—"

"moms? is everything okay?"
he peered around the corner, cosied up in warm pajamas, holding his polaroid camera like a child with a stuffed animal.
he looked to both of his mothers with a worried expression.

"yes, darling..." one responded. "that's a nice camera, when did you get that?"

"today actually, a friend gave it to me..." his cheeks flushed, thinking about the interaction that happened earlier.

"honey, we need to speak to you—"

"i think he likes me!" wooyoung interrupted, clutching the camera to his chest. "he wrote this really sweet card and always gives me gifts... he's the sweetest."

"that's lovely, but—"

"AND, he took the first polaroid of himself for me! isn't that sweet?"

"yes, dear..." she sighed.

wooyoung retreated back to his room solemnly, humming a soft melody.

'the truth will break him. we can't tell him. not just yet."
