Jules 'Ito' Morales wondered what they had done in their past life to deserve this as they ducked to avoid a slew of fireballs for the second time that hour.
Blue fire, to be exact. Which, from what they remembered from their old science classes, meant that it was even hotter than regular fire.
Something that was confirmed when it whizzed past their face, threatening to singe their curls, and...
The white-haired, red-eyed boy near them took the brunt of the attack they had avoided.
Whoops.
"AAAAAAA –! HELP! I'm on fire over here!"
They brought their hands up to cover their mouth, trying to will their panic away. Fire fire fire–!
Stop, drop, and roll!
Or, well, 'run, tackle, and hope for the best'.
Ito crashed into him as hard as they could and sent them both sprawling onto the floor. This was great for the 'putting out a fire' objective. It wasn't as great for the 'keeping people from getting hurt' objective, though, as he hit the floor with a loud thwap that had to suck.
Something that the loud groan he made seemed to confirm.
They rolled off of him as quickly as they possibly could, hands fluttering around the swamp that was his robes to check for injuries. Unfortunately, the black fabric seemed to never end. "Mier – ...coles. Sorry, I panicked! Are you okay?!"
His hands caught theirs and he gave them a bright smile. "It's okay! I'll be fine – a little bruise is way less bad than a burn! Thanks for helping!"
Ito glanced up, but Grim didn't seem all that concerned with attacking them now that he had made an initial blast. Instead, the monster focused on the people that had dared to insult him.
The guy dragged them by the arm so they could hide behind a nearby alcove. The floor thundered as hundreds of feet rushed towards the door. Enma counted for two of them. Kuroki was... hiding behind the mirror, which the monster seemed to be avoiding hitting for some reason.
Ito smiled at the guy and gently took his face in their hands. He sat there pliantly as they checked him over for bruising. "Seriously, though, did you forget about stop, drop, and roll? Or water magic, if that exists...?" They chided lightly. "... though, if the fire is liquid-based that might have made it worse..."
"Heh, guess you weren't the only one that was panicking," he said, though he didn't seem all that concerned as he casually rubbed the back of his neck (Ito smacked it away lightly so they could keep checking for blood or bruising). It was silent for a moment until something seemed to hit him in a less literal way than the ground had: "Wait, you don't know how its magic works? Isn't that your familiar?"
"Nope, haven't seen that thing... er, monster, it wanted to be called a monster, right? I just met that monster today. Same with the other magicless kids."
"Hm," he said. "Are you okay?"
"You were just on fire, worry about yourself," they said, grinning and letting him go. It seemed he was fine.
They got an unimpressed look the moment he turned around.
They sighed. "... yeah. I should be going home right after this."
"Good. Nice kids shouldn't be here."
Ito blinked as he put a large hand in their hair and ruffled it aggressively. They weren't used to being on the receiving end of this, it threw them for a loop for a moment. So, it was no surprise when they, maybe a little dumbly, echoed, "Nice kids?"
