Enma had been cleaning up the one somewhat usable bedroom when he had heard giggling and something creaking.
He frowned, turning back around.
A portly ghost was jumping on the bed he had just cleared.
Enma dropped the moth-eaten sheets he had been hugging to his chest.
"You're quite the efficient little housewife, aren't you? Heaven knows we need one of those around here!" Quicker than Enma could blink, the ghost rushed forward until it was right in front of him, so close that he likely would have felt the ghost's breath fanning over his face, had the ghost been breathing at all. His hands were laced behind his back politely, but the grin on his face was too large to be anything other than unsettling. "Why don't you stick around? Forever."
Enma stared blankly.
Then, he lit up, resting his hands on the short ghost's shoulders. "This is awesome! In this world, you can see ghosts without having special powers?"
"Um..." The ghost balked a little.
"I'm going to have to refuse your implied offer to become a ghost, but I hope we can get along as roommates!" He steamrolled right over him, eyes bright.
"Yeah... no sweat..." The ghost said, still seeming a little dazed. "You're not surprised?"
"I mean, obviously, I am, but I've never seen a ghost before! Don't you think that's kinda cool?"
The ghost stared for a moment longer before meeting Enma's grin inch by inch. "All of the other students are too scared to even approach this place, it's nice to have an enthusiastic visitor for once."
"I don't know why I wouldn't be! You're so cool! This whole world is cool!" He dragged the ghost over to sit on the bumpy mattress again with him before clasping his hands together. "I mean, there's magic here!"
Now the ghost seemed interested, too. "You don't have magic back where you're from? How do your phones work?"
"Oh! I actually know this, I took apart my phone once to see how it worked!" He said, beaming. His parents had been pissed, but Enma had enjoyed the short activity far more than he would have enjoyed anything he could have done on the actual device. He was more than happy to explain his findings to an interested audience.
The ghost ducked out briefly and brought two more ghosts to listen to him talk, and Enma started over for their sake.
He was halfway through explaining the concept of electricity when he heard someone yelling his name.
"Enma!" Ito screamed. "Enma where are you?! Are you okay?!"
He frowned and got up to open the door, but it was flung open before he was even halfway there. Ito stood in the doorway, breathing heavily, holding Grim out like a cross they were using to ward off evildoers.
"Is everything alright? Is that Grim?!" Enma asked, eyebrows knitting together with concern.
The moment their frenzied gaze landed on him they were dragging him behind them by his shirt.
Enma frowned and looked to Kuroki, who was half-jogging down the hallway towards them, for an explanation. Kuroki only pointed sharply at the ghosts, which explained absolutely nothing.
The two newer ghosts both held their hands up in surrender.
"Hey, hey!" The one with a slightly wobbly head said. "We're just talkin' to him! Put down the cat!"
"I'm a monster!" Grim said, flames flickering in his throat.
Enma frowned and clapped a hand over the monster's mouth, ignoring the blisters that rose on his skin. "Hey! Relax! I was just explaining how tech works in our world!"
