I sit on my bed, taking these few minutes to myself before the rush of hair and makeup comes to make me look all dolled up for the ball tonight. I hear something drop onto the floor and roll under my bed. I sigh and roll my eyes, knowing that's my lip ice now lying under my bed. I huff as I slip off of my bed and onto the floor. I begin to crawl under my bed as I see the lip ice. I slide my hand along the floor, towards where the lip ice has stopped but my hand catches on the edge of a floorboard. I stop and place my hand on the floorboard. It feels as though it has lifted. I pull at it and it moves. I gasp as I lift up the floorboard. I place it next to the hole in the floor as I pull myself closer. At the top I find a bound pile of paper, almost like a notebook. I wipe the dust from the top of the notebook, clearly no one has moved this for a while as the dust was incredibly thick. I pick up the ring and I feel something rush down my spine, it feels like anger but there is a glimmer of something else. I shake my head and place the ring down, confused by the random emotions. The ring could use a little bit of cleaning. I push them to the side and place my hand back into the floor. I pull out a pouch. It's soft and silky, like the money pouches they used hundreds of years ago. I grab the other notebook and the handful of loose pages before replacing the floorboard. I don't forget to grab my lip ice before I grab my new findings and shimmy my way out from underneath my bed.
I place the notebooks on my bedside table with the ring balanced on top of them. I sit on my bed and open the pouch. I pull out really old coins. I inspect them to find it is coins from the old currency that they used to use here in the Netherlands before we switched to Euros. The Dutch Guilder coins blink back at me as the sunshine bounces off of them. They shine as if they have never been used before, yet the pouch that contained them was layered with dust. I place them to the side, deciding to ask my dad about them later. I shift my eyes to the pile of loose pages next to me. I recognize that the drawing is done in charcoal.
My eyes widen as I realize what is drawn on the page. I quickly flip through all the pages and laugh. They are all charcoal drawings of what looks like different sex positions. "Where on earth did these come from?" I question, confused and concerned. "Where did what come from?" I hear from my door and I look up, quickly holding the pages against my chest. "Thomas, what are you doing here?" I ask, laughing in hopes that he forgets about his question. "I'm just checking to see if you're alright and ready for tonight." He smiles, staying by the door thankfully. "Yup, I'm all good and ready to socialize." I smile. "Good to know." He smiles and walks away. I sigh, thanking the universe that he didn't ask about the pages because I have no idea how I would have explained that. I decide to put them back under the loose floorboard, knowing that clearly no one has found them before me so it seems like a good hiding place.
I stand up and reach for the ring I placed on top of the notebooks. I pick it up and the same spark travels down my spine. I shake it off as I inspect the ring. I brush the dust off with the cloth I use to clean my sunglasses. The ring shines in my hands. It's simple but it's cute. I move the ring to slip it onto my finger, to see if it fits but before I can, a knock echoed through my room. I turn to find the hair and makeup team that is hired for all of our events filing into my room. They spread out all of their things along my dressing table and I put the ring back onto my bedside table and greet the ladies as I sit on the chair in the middle of them.
Ruth helps me into the beautiful deep blue dress that we designed for tonight. It fits perfectly and it hugs my waist before falling down to the ground. The soft, flowing skirt is so beautiful as it moves around my legs when I walk. I look in the floor length mirror and admire the dress. "It's beautiful. I love it so much." I smile back at Ruth. "It really is perfect. Remind me to thank Rachel." Ruth says before helping me with some final touch ups.
"I'll watch Twitter for all of the photos from tonight. Enjoy." Ruth says with a smile before she leaves my room. "Thanks Ruth!" I yell after her as I admire myself in the mirror once more before walking back to my bedside table. I pick up the ring and that feeling returns. It confuses me immensely. Why does this feeling of anger spark whenever I touch this ring? My train of thought is broken by a knocking on my door. I turn to find my brothers in my doorway. Their hair styled and their suits neatly pressed. "Dang sis, will I have to fight the guys off of you tonight?" Stefan asks. "What I think Stefan means is that you look incredibly gorgeous tonight." Thomas smiles at me. "So you're telling me you aren't going to chase the guys away from her tonight." Stefan questions the older boy. "No, because Jo threatened to smack me if I intervened anymore." Thomas says, rolling his eyes. "Remind me to thank your girlfriend when I see her just now." I smile. "Come, we're going downstairs now." Thomas says. Without a second thought I slip the ring onto my right hand and walk to my brothers by the door. I see a flash of my room, except it's not my room. There is no TV. There are no lights. It's all candles. Before I can get a good look it disappears, as if it was nothing.
