Getting A Debt

[ Andrew's POV ]

Well it looks like things are on the mend, we made a good choice coming here... for now that is, I hope it keeps up. On the relationship front me and Ron have grown close with Sadie and Mary Beth, Ron and Sadie decided to get married they said it felt like they have known eachother for years but they are waiting for the right time to. Me and Mary Beth talked about it apart of me is scared to ask her, my last relationship didn't end well. Speaking of my last relationship, every now and then I catch Abigail stealing glances at me, if I'm being honest I think I'll always love her but I'm not gonna be the guy to break up a family, besides things with Mary Beth are really good. I just hope Dutch has a plan.

After I finished writing in my journel I put it back in my satchel and got up from my bed while putting my Granddads hat on then left the tent. I stretched and yawned then saw Ron talking with Arthur so I went up to them, when they saw me they smiled as I said.

Andrew: Hey fellers, what's on the agenda for today.

Arthur took the last drag of his cigarette and put it out as he said.

Arthur: Well I'm gonna head out and meet up with Javiar,Charles and Trelwaney.

Ron: Ok brother you be careful it isn't that safe out that way.

Arthur began to walk to his horse as he said.

Arthur: I know and I will. Just don't keep us waiting boys.

We see him off and start to walk off until Dutch stopped us and said.

Dutch: Boys I have a favor I want to ask you two.

Andrew: Ok Dutch what is it.

He looked like he was gonna tell us to kill a dog then he said.

Dutch: I need you two to help Herr Strauss with ...... Debt collecting....

I was wrong way worse than killing a dog. I looked to Ron and saw his face, he never liked Strauss cause Strauss always thought he was above him when in reality he is beniegth Ron. Ron sighed heavily as Dutch continued.

Dutch: I know it ain't glamourous, but it's away to get money.

I put my hand up to stop him as I said.

Andrew: Ok we will do it. But this is the last time you know me and Ron hate that kind of work.

He nodded then went back to his tent probably to make out with Molly, I don't see what he sees in that one she's to posh for my taste but that is just me. Me and Ron made our way over to Strauss who was sitting at his table writing, when he saw us he said.

Strauss: Oh, gentlemen what do I owe the..... Pleasure.

When he said pleasure he looked at Ron with discust, I looked at Ron who was trying his best not to jump over the table at him so I spoke wanting to get this over with.

Andrew: Strauss, Dutch sent us here he said you had a debt you needed collected so we are here give us the information.

He got up from his seat and gave me a paper then said.

Strauss: One Thomas Downes, we leaned him alot of money and he's been making excuses for almost 2 weeks.

I took the paper and started to walk away with Ron following me when Ron asked.

Ron: Where are we headed?

Andrew: We are headed (looking at the paper) to a ranch just outside Valentine. Should be easy enough.

We got on Alpha and Lightning and rode off to get this debt. We went past a large field with Pronghorns walking about which reminded me that I have to get some more game for Pearson soon or he's gonna start complaining even though we still have some of that bear meat left. We finally got to the ranch, if that is what you want to call it, it was run down and barely had any livestock. We looked around until Ron nudged me I looked at him and he pointed to the small garden where a man was gardening I looked back at Ron and we nodded, we dismounted Alpha and Lightning then tied the to a near by tree then we walked over to the man as Ron spoke.

Ron: Thomas Downes?

The man looked up as we got to the gate then said.

Thomas Downes: Y-- *Cough* *Cough*, Yes that's me what do you two gentlemen need.

Me and Ron looked at him and we could tell he was sick. He had a pale face and blood on his shirt and barely standing. Me and Ron looked at eachother then back to Thomas as Ron spoke.

Ron: You got a debt, we are here to collect it.

Thomas looked down and sighed heavily as he coughed more, then spoke.

Thomas Downes: Look gentlemen, I don't have the money, we owe more on this ranch than it's worth and barely getting by.

After he said that a man and boy came out of the house and stepped up to the gate then said.

Thomas' Wife: Thomas is everything ok ?

I looked back at Ron and whispered in his ear.

Andrew: Look Ron, he has a family I think we can pay his Debt it won't break us, we still have plenty left over from the train.

He looked at me then said.

Ron: Your right Andrew.

He looked at Thomas then said.

Ron: Don't worry about it we will take care of it. You all have a nice day.

I tipped my hat to Thomas' Wife then we made our way to Alpha and Lightning untied them and saddled up as we made our way back to camp dead set on paying off the debt for that unfortunate soul. We made it back to camp and dismounted Alpha and Lightning and tied them up and fed them their favorite food oatcakes and sliced apples, after we did that we went up to Strauss and Ron asked him.

Ron: How much was the Downes man's debt.

Strauss looked up from the books and looked at Ron with discust as he spoke.

Strauss: Why would that matter--.

Before he could finish I slammed my hand down on the table earning eyes all on us as I said.

Andrew: He didn't stutter, how much was his debt.

Strauss looked at me in shock then said.

Strauss: He owed $15 dollars.

Ron took $15 dollars out of his satchel and threw it at Strauss then said with fire in his eyes.

Ron: $15 dollars? Really and you were so desperate to get it back well there I paid for him.

Strauss jolted up and looked at Ron with a scoul then said as we began to walk away.

Strauss: As I suspected You can't send a redskin to do a job, Andrew you should choose your friends more carefully.

When he said that me and Ron stopped in our tracks and turned to face him, then out of nowhere Ron ran at him and tackled him to the ground and started to beat him senseless. Uncle and Bill tried to intervene but I stood in front of them and drawn my revolvers as I said.

Andrew: No boys he's been pushing him for years let him teach him a lesson.

After a few moments Ron stopped and got off him and yelled as he threw his tomahawk in a nearby tree and walked off. I spun my revolvers then holstered them as I spoke to Uncle and Bill.

Andrew: Now you can help him.

I began to walk away, I looked over my shoulder to see Strauss' face had cuts and blood all over it and both of his eyes were swollen shut. I went over to the tree and took Ron's Tomahawk from it and made my way to his tent to see how my brother was doing.
