"I'm sorry for everything." Mariana read from the paper. "I'm sorry I was not a good father and not good husband." Mariana's eyes filled with tears, but Charlie noticed how he forced his voice to not quiver. "I am sorry I cheated at first. I'm sorry for not telling you how I felt."

Charlie tilted his head, confused. "Wha-"

"Te amo, Charlie." Mariana confessed.

Charlie's eyes widened. His chest tightened with confliction. His body froze when Mariana leaned forward slightly. Their eyes locked, and the silence stretched.

"I-I love you, Charlie." Mariana choked, smiling warily. "I was so scared. So scared for so long." He turned back to the paper in his hands. "I couldn't--didn't--want to get hurt. But I hurt you."

Tears fell from Charlie's eyes. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. 3 years he had to endure Mariana's shit and now he tells him he had loved him?

"I know I can't be forgiven. I don't want your forgiveness unless... you mean it. Charlie, you need better than me."

Charlie loved this man. He loved him to the point that it broke him. What was he to do now? He didn't dare breathe until Mariana finished talking.

"But I want to be better. For you. For Juanaflippa. For our family." Mariana's gaze hardened, as if he was upset with himself. But when he glanced back at Charlie, they softened. "I don't deserve you, I know. But I fight for you. Always, forever. Por favor Charlie dame otra oportunidad para ser mejor. Por favor. No necesitas perdonarme o amarme de nuevo. Sólo dame una oportunidad para cambiar." Mariana cried.

When Mariana didn't speak, Charlie turned away from him. He couldn't speak, and if he could, what would he say? He stood up slowly, testing to see if his legs still worked. Mariana didn't try to stop him. Not that he could anyway, too busy letting the tears from his eyes fall freely. Charlie crouched down next to the tv. After what seemed like hours of silence, Charlie stood and walked over to Mariana. He peered through his dark hair. Mariana's eyes glinting with more unshed tears.

"Mariana," Charlie croaked out, "please leave."

He stepped back as Mariana stood up. He didn't say anything as he left. Only pausing to glimpse back at Charlie. Charlie locked the door behind him and collapsed on the couch.
