[ Guys I HATED this chapter HAHAH. Enjoyyy ]
"It seemed funny to me that the sunset she saw from
her patio and the one I saw from the back steps was
the same one. Maybe the two different worlds we lived
in weren't so different. We saw the same sunset."Book: The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton
News about Brock Ferrings death spread quickly around Duane High, and Amy was mostly at fault.
She hadn't meant to cause such a stir. But when Laura had made an offhand comment about a fatal car crash on the night of Valentine's Day, Amy had convinced her sister to help her figure out who had suffered. Then, when they had seen that it had been Teresa and Brock—the Teresa and Brock—Amy had grabbed her phone and contacted Romeo to tell him the news. They had exchanged numbers during that lunch. Romeo had quickly responded in shock, and after she confirmed the facts, he had disappeared.
Next thing she knew, the whole school was aware.
"Did you tell everyone?" Amy asked Romeo the next morning, ignoring Mrs. Blacker, their History teacher, who was giving her and all other unseated students the stink-eye.
"I only told the boys, I swear," Romeo said in defence, raising his arms. "But... you know how quick word gets around."
"Tell me about it." She gnawed on her lip. "I feel so bad about it. Brock was so young. I didn't know him, really, but... and Teresa..."
"I know, it's pretty tragic." Romeo winced. "Jojo's pretending he doesn't care."
"Why's that?"
"Teresa's his sister." His eyes widened suddenly and he grabbed her arm. "But you didn't hear that from me."
"Duly noted," she replied, and went to her seat where Laura was waiting. Mrs. Blacker had been moments away from sending her off to the office, she could feel it. The woman had always been too sensitive.
Laura did not turn to look at her when Amy took her place next to the girl. Amy refrained from rolling her eyes. This was getting ridiculous. Clearly, Laura didn't like her talking to Romeo. But what did it matter? This was her life, not Laura's, not her brother's, nor her father's. Hers alone. And she wasn't about to cave to her sister's sudden silent treatment.
Half an hour later, when Mrs. Blacker had assigned them work to complete before class was over, Amy finally confronted Laura.
"What is your problem?" Amy hissed over. "You've never acted this way with any of the other guys I've been with."
"None of those boys literally went by the name of the most iconic romantic character in history—the one love story that ends in tragedy," Laura hissed back. "As far as I'm concerned, if you want to ignore my advice, then I have nothing left to say to you."
And with that, she turned away.
Amy rolled her eyes. She loved Laura dearly, but the girl could be a real brat sometimes. Sisters. It didn't help that Amy was so often gracious and patient, always willing to listen to the other side of things. Laura had a special talent for getting on her every last nerve.
With a deep breath, Amy turned back to the front of the class, strangling her pencil in her hand.
Lunch time had soon arrived, for which Amy was glad. She and Laura shared most classes, and frankly, Amy couldn't stand to be around the girl. It wasn't often that Laura truly acted like a little sister, but it seemed her time had arrived, and she certainly wasn't holding back.
She forced herself to relax as she pulled herself back into the present. It was lunch time, which meant that Amy could distance herself from her irritable siblings. Yes, siblings. William was still causing her as many grief as he usually did, and if he got a whiff of what was going on between her and Laura, he would most certainly make both their lives much more miserable, just to fuel the fire between the two sisters. He enjoyed watching them quarrel.
