Katherine

No one dared to enter my room; I locked it whenever I left. I took all the keys that opened Larna and my room. I don't want anyone to enter it except me. The servants whisper nonsense saying I'm possessed or doing witchcraft. The common folk are always superstitious about anything odd, especially about people coming alive after death. My parents say it's my way of grieving. I hear Mother drinking herself to a stupor as well as hearing Trystin uncontrollably sobbing. I wish I could just become deaf. Just shove daggers in my ears. I don't want to hear anyone's nonsense.

But today is the day I've been dreading after the incident; I've been recovering from the poison for 2 and a half weeks and this is why I was unable to help prepare the body for the funeral, but I feel the worst for Mother; I only lost a sister. She lost her child.

The First Rite of Passage: Prothesis: the women in one's family began keening and ululating so that everyone knew of the individual's demise.

I have to participate. Then the women prepare the body for the funeral. Mother and the servants already prepared her body for the funeral in the first few days of her being deceased.

After we were done keening and ululating, we headed to my parents' room. My stomach churned and I became nauseated by the smell ever increasing as I moved close to the room. My muscles began to tense as we approached the door, my face pale. I haven't seen Larna's body since the incident. The door opens and there it is, her body. Mother already closed her eyes and mouth. She is already placed in her coffin. It is made of pure gold. Her skin is in between the colours of purple and black. She has a chin strap tied around her head and chin to prevent the jaw from sagging; they washed the whole body, anointed it with olive oil; they clothed the body and wrapped it in a winding sheet, leaving only her head exposed. At this stage of her body her hair, teeth and nails can easily fall off that is why we must be gentle. I feel warm tears fall down my face. We couldn't even do everything properly in order because of me. All of this is because of me.

The Second Rite of Passage: Ekphora: taking the body from one's home to one's place of burial. Only my family participated with the servants .... After the poison, we did not dare allow anyone other than the family and servants near her body. We went outside the kingdom's wall near the ocean. Her golden coffin with her body inside is transported with a carriage. She was buried. I wish it was me in that coffin instead of her. My mother's eyes were sunken in and puffy. I heard her last night; she was crying like nails on a chalkboard. My half-brother did not drink at all after Larna's death, his movement is slower. His eyes have darkened, and he has become thin and pale. But father...he may seem to put up a brave face for the family, but I often hear him sob at night, it's soft as a whisper but somehow, I'm able to hear it. I've heard him trying to find the culprit with his advisers. Our entire kingdom is on lockdown. Her coffin was buried near a giant aquatic creature's rib cage covered with flowers and gifts.
