Finis was bored.
They observed their form. They were currently in a form that mirrored the light of the Universe. Finis was particularly fond of this form, as light was very special to Finis. It kept the Universe running in a deterministic way, almost like clockwork.
Finis sighed. It had been almost 10 billion years since he created the Universe, and almost nothing had happened. Barely any life had been created, and the few species who had been created had wiped themselves out before they even learned the basic rules of the Universe. Finis knew this and was tired. Every time there was even a chance of anything more advanced than a plant started developing, a meteor hit.
Or a disease wiped everything out.
Or a supervolcano erupted.
Or the star of the solar system blew up.
Finis had asked this question millions of times, but like a child desperate to reach their destination, he asked again.
"Nul, When do things get good?"
Nul, who had been inactive for a long time, let out an almighty roar at being disturbed. Nul looked at Finis and sighed as well.
"We both know we can't know that for sure. Quantum Mechanics, and Free Will, and that shit."
"Hmmm," Finis pondered. "What if we changed that?"
"Listen, the Universe is built on Quantum Mechanics, and we can't change that now, you should of-"
"I'm not talking about that," Finis interrupted. "What if we created intelligent life? Made it interesting for once?"
Nul thought about this. There was no rule against it or anything like that, but they tried not to interfere with the Universe when possible. They tried to let it remain a closed system. There was no telling how much it could mess up reality if intelligent life was created.
"I'm not sure if that's a good idea..." Nul said.
Normally, Finis would have relented at this point, but something stirred inside them.
"I really, really want this! I want to do this, MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE!"
Nul was surprised at this outburst. "Is it worth risking all that we've worked for, just for a bit of fun?"
Finis considered this. Why did they want this so badly? Just to quell their boredom?
"It's just- What's the point? Of the Universe, of existence? Why are we doing this? We exist solely to keep things in order, but what are we keeping in order?"
"Just in case of freak accidents, like an incredibly important boson being out of place, leading to the eventual premature collapse of space-time-" Nul started.
"When has that happened? When will that ever happen?" Finis retorted. Finis knew this wouldn't work, as Nul was incredibly pessimistic, and had a 'If something can go wrong, it will go wrong' mentality. But Finis was hoping that they could change Nul's mind by asking as many questions as possible, giving them as much time as possible to realize they were wrong. It was a strategy that had not worked before, but Finis was optimistic. Hell, Finis was optimism.
"We've got to account for every atom, at any point in time anything could go wrong-"
"Yes, you've made that very clear. You've decided to use you're nigh-omniscience to be incredibly boring." Finis was being very childish intentionally because they knew it often worked.
Nul sighed. "How would your idea work? What would you do?"
Finis literally beamed at Nul. A beam of light shot out of them, temporarily blinding Nul. They took the divine equivalent of a deep breath, and started talking at hundreds of words a minute.
"So, so, so, we could like, you know, create life on a couple - no, fifty - no a couple hundred planets across the universe, right? Like, like basic stuff, bacteria, microscopic scale stuff, then we wait, like, like a couple billion years, and then on at least, maybe, like 50 of them will have developed intelligent life? Then, then, we could like watch, and help, and have fun with them, and yeah that's my plan!"
This was all spoken in less than 10 seconds.
Nul stared awkwardly at Finis, This went on for about 20 seconds, and then Nul started laughing. Nul laughed more than they ever had before, they were straight up cackling.
"That... Oh my god... I was expecting something well thought out and planned, but... Wow."
Finis frowned. "Do you not like it?"
"No, I love it. I think we should do it, and soon too."
Finis stopped in confusion. "But, then why did you-"
"Because it was so unexpected, thats why!" Nul's laughing slowly eased. "This could lead to the end of reality as we know it, this could fuck up space-time beyond belief. And you still want to continue?"
"Yes." Finis replied uneasily.
"Then let's do it!" Nul stepped toward Finis. "When do we start?"
"I think we should plan a bit further."
"Yes, you're right." Nul replied, their smile fading. "If we do this, it should be exact. From now on, we must monitor any anomalies caused by the new life forms. We also must not get too attached. We must be ready to wipe them out at any point, for the good of the Universe. You're optimism may be infectious enough to change my mind of that matter, but I still care deeply for the universe."
"Alright, fine." Finis said. "Do we have a deal?"
"We have a deal."
