"one hell of a stunt you pulled back there," someone said from behind me while I sat on the ground looking into the vast nothingness of wherever we were.
I turn my head slightly to be met with zigzag, "Yeah, sorry about that." I turned back and patted the ground next to me as a sign of welcoming him to sit next to me.
He came and sat beside me on the dirt, our knees touching as we sat with criss-crossed legs. I could feel him looking at me as I gathered small pebbles to throw in front of us.
" My anger gets the best of me sometimes. I don't mean to hurt people and be rude or anything like that. I just got a lot of shit going on in my brain sometimes it becomes too much to handle, you know?" I say to break the silence, pulling my knees to my chest. I take slight glances at him every once in a while.
"It's alright. If we're being honest everyone's first few weeks are kinda like that until they start to realize that they have to adjust. Change ain't easy for everyone, especially the kids that end up here." He replies after a couple of minutes, making eye contact.
His hair was so crazy and everywhere but cute in a way. His eyes were blue but looked grey in this dark lighting. With the crickets chirping in the background and the distant sound of chatter and teenage boys messing around the moment seemed so peaceful. Probably the most peaceful and kind moment I have had in a long time.
" I uh, never got to hear your story," I said, starting the conversation back up.
" yeah... I guess you didn't," He replies rubbing the back of his neck and turning to face the desert." it was just some stupid prank, I've never really liked school. Just too many things and people at once, and adults with authority never seem to like me very much." He started to explain with a smirk at the end. I stifled a breathy laugh as he continued, "My buddies were supposed to take the fall with me but they chickened. It was js a couple of firecrackers that were supposed to scare some guys taking a wizz but then the fire alarms and sprinklers went off."
" they hauled you out here for that?" I said almost laughing in disbelief.
" yeah," he replied with a smile," they said it was some sort of recklessness and endangerment and like vandalism or some shit. I'm telling you authority just doesn't like me." He looked at me towards the end as we shared smiles and some laughter.
There was silence after that. Comfortable nonetheless. I debated in my head whether or not I should tell him, I didn't think it would change anything. I guess In a way, I'm embarrassed.
" I stole a car," I said still looking straight ahead not wanting to have to read his expression.
" it was my mom's boyfriend's," I say, not even noticing I was grimacing at the thought of him and her and them together," but to be fair he was pretty shitty and has enough money as is so no reason to feel sorry."
" where'd you go?" he asked. I was confused, to be honest. Usually, that's not the reaction you get when you admit something like that but I'm not upset at the least.
I looked over at him and then straight again after making quick eye contact, " the highway. I was so mad, I just didn't know what to do or where to go. I made sure not to hit anyone. I just wanted to go fast and get as far away as I could as quickest as I could. And I did, it just didn't last as long as I hoped." I took a deep breath and laid back on the dirt, one of my arms behind my head and the other on my stomach, rising with each slow breath I took in.
" I'm sure he deserved it." That was the only thing he said before he joined me on the ground.
