Another day has gone by in elementary school. Today was a happy day for me, but for two brothers it was a sad day. Today was my birthday and I turned five years old. While for two brothers, their mother had just died. Truly, a horrible thing to have your mother die at such a young age. They were around the same age as me and in the same class as me. I've never spoken to them though and they've never spoken to me. I didn't even know their names. They had both been gloomy throughout the day and only one of them wished me a happy birthday while the other one sat at his desk in silence.
It was the end of the day and I was sitting on a bench that sat just in front of the school. I was waiting for my dad to come pick me up, like he does every day. While sitting out there, I noticed one of the brothers sitting across from me on the edge of the curb, looking down at the ground. He had a sad expression on his face as he hung his head. Whatever it was that he was upset about, I felt sadness wash over me too. Without really knowing, I stood up and slowly walked over to him. When he noticed me coming he glanced up at me. Tears were in his eyes and a glassy appearance covered his eyes.
"Are you ok?" I asked curiously as I sat beside him. He simply looked away, sniffling. "Did something happen?" He didn't respond as he continued to look away. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but sometimes it's easier to talk to someone instead of bottling it up inside." He still didn't respond making me sigh. "Do you want me to leave you alone?" He continued to not respond to my questions. I sighed heavily again as I stood up and began to walk away, but a hand gripped onto my arm, pulling me back. I glanced back at him in confusion. He stared at me with a heartbroken expression.
"Wait," he protested in a whispered tone as he held onto my arm, "Don't go yet." His expression pierced through me and his grip was strong, leaving me no choice but to sit back down. He sighed heavily as he wiped his remaining tears away. "My mom just died."
"I'm sorry," I apologized sympathetically. He nodded as he looked away again. "Were you close to her?" He nodded again as he looked ahead of himself.
"My brother and I loved her. She was incredibly nice," he said as a small smile appeared on his lips, "Our lunches were always homemade and she'd always stick a little note in our lunch boxes telling us to have a great day." I smiled at that. Yeah, my mom does that too.
"She sounds wonderful," I replied as I smiled at him. He nodded back as he smiled back. He then went quiet and the air around us became awkward. "You know, I know it's hard when someone close to you dies, but that's where you have to depend on others to help you through it. Friends, for example, are good people to depend on because they will always be there for you during the good and the bad." He stared at me for a moment before sighing.
"I would if I had any friends," he responded with a sigh, "My brother is the one who has lots of friends. Everybody else just thinks I'm a loser." My eyes slightly widened at that. That's strange that everybody liked his brother even though they're twins.
"You don't have a single friend?" I asked in surprise. He shook his head as he looked down into his lap. "Well, then I'll be your friend." He glanced up at this and stared at me in surprise.
"Really?" He asked in shock. I gave a nod as I gave him a warm hug. He seemed surprised by the action because he didn't hug back for a moment, but as I continued to hug him he soon hugged me back and I could feel his grip around me tighten.
"You can talk to me about anything," I reassured him as I pulled away from him. He smiled at me as his eyes lit up. "Even if it's about the littlest thing, I will listen." He smiled again as he gave a nod. Just then I heard the sound of a car horn honking my way. I glance around to see a car pull up next to the curb. Dad came out of the car.
"There you are honey, ready to go home?" He asked as he held his hand out to me. I glanced back at the boy for a moment.
"I have to go now. Don't be too sad," I told him as I flash him an encouraging smile before taking my dad's hand. He pulled me up and pulled me towards the backseat.
"Wait!" I heard the sound of a voice calling out to me. I glanced around to see the boy standing behind me.
"Are you ok?" I asked in confusion and curiosity. He nodded.
"What's your name?" He asked curiously as he stared at me directly in the eye.
"It's Lena," I answered with a smile. He smiled back and nodded. Soon enough, he leaned in and gave me a quick peck on the cheek. My eyes widened at his action and when he pulled away he smiled shyly at me with slightly blushing cheeks.
"Thanks for being my friend," he thanked me as he sent me a gentle smile. I smiled back and gave a nod in response. "One more thing." I looked back at him with a questioning look. "Can you be mine?" I looked at him in confusion before he leaned in again and kissed my lips. My eyes go wide at this and he pulled away. I couldn't seem to find my voice, so I simply nodded in response. "Promise you'll always be mine?" As he asked that, I tried to regain my composure from his sudden kiss.
"I promise," I promised with a nod and a shy smile. He smiled back as we both linked out pinky fingers together, sealing our promise. I stared at him with a small smile. His blonde hair hair gently blew across his face creating a certain beauty about him.
"Bye Lena," he remarked as he sent me a smile before turning around and heading back into the school. I watched him leave until he was out of sight before getting into the car. That was my first promise that I had ever made and my first kiss. That boy had stolen my first kiss. That boy, who I didn't even know the name of, stole my first kiss. That boy, who I knew I probably wouldn't see again, stole my first kiss.
I knew that I was going to switching schools soon and moving out of the neighborhood. The day after, I switched schools and moved into a different neighborhood. I had gotten new friends as well. I never saw or heard from that boy again and I had no idea if I ever would again, but nevertheless I had many firsts that day and I knew that day would be a day to treasure.
