Verglas woke to a rock hitting their tail, and a harsh voice. "Get up, you lazy dragonets!" Kestrel threw another rock that bounced off Verglas's nose, its surface glittering with frost as it rolled away. "Morrowseer's coming in a few hours, so make yourselves presentable and get your lazy, stupid tails out of here!" Verglas rolled over to see Kestrel's dark red tail swishing around the corner. They heaved themselves up, shaking chunks of ice off their tail where it had draped in the river. Peril rolled over, the water hissing on her coppery scales. "What did she say?" Peril asked sleepily.

"Something about us being lazy baboons, a visitor coming soon, being presentable, not being stupid, something else about us being lazy," Verglas replied, as the other dragonets opened their eyes and stretched. "Well," Verglas said, shaking their wings out, "I'm going to go find something to eat." They turned and headed towards the dining cave. It was dim, lit only by the fading torches along the wall. Verglas hooked their claws into a mouse and quickly ate it, then polished their scales in the clear stream running along the back of the cave.

Morrowseer's gaze travelled along each of the dragonets. His eyes, dark as underground caverns, landed on Peril's coppery scales, shimmering with heat, and the burnt moss beneath her talons. He narrowed his eyes, and then his gaze fixed on Verglas, and the frost spreading along the stone under their own talons. "Something has gone very wrong here," he sniffed in disapproval.

Tsunami's tail lashed, her eyes glittering with a mix of anger and defiance. "Yes, it has! Those three keep us locked in a cave and treat us like baby salamanders! We never get to do anything!" Tsunami shouted.

"Tsunami, hold your tongue," Dune snapped, fuming. Morrowseer suddenly swung his tail around to hit the side of Tsunami's head hard. It collided with a sickening crack, but Tsunami just jumped to her feet and lunged at the huge NightWing, her claws raking his thick scales and her teeth biting for weak spots. Clay joined in the fight, and Sunny crept behind Morrowseer, latching onto his tail like a snake. Morrowseer yowled with pain and tried to shake the two dragonets off, but they only bit harder and held on. He pried Sunny off of his tail and set her down next to Starflight, who leaned into her warm golden scales, scowling and Morrowseer and the guardians. Morrowseer scowled at Tsunami and Clay, several spots still bleeding after the fight. Verglas kept their face calm and expressionless, though inside they were screaming, the guardians can't possibly think it's okay for him to treat us like that! I wonder if they'd stop me if I attacked him. Probably. Peril looked as angry as Verglas felt, and Verglas twined their tail around Peril's in an attempt to calm her down. "The MudWing and SeaWing will do, and the IceWing and SkyWing seem fierce, even if they didn't fight," Morrowseer announced, then his voice dropped to a mutter, "They might even be a little too ambitious. But those two... We'll have to see," He said, sweeping his tail to point at each of them. And with that, he swept out of the cave, his midnight-dark tail dragging behind him like the promise of more things to come.
