When your starting a book, it's recommended to post the first 2-3 chapters to hook people in, then updating a few times a week. When you have got a loyal reader base, you can pull this back a bit with a minimum of updating once a week.
Obviousley sometimes life get's in the way of updates, but as a rule I would try to get atleast 1 update out a week, especially when first starting out.
Updates are really important.
Updating frequently means that you are not giving your readers (even if there is only one) a chance to forget about your book. If you engage a couple of people and get them to read every chapter more will eventually come. You build up your base one person at a time. As good as your story may be, people aren't going to siting on the edge of their chair waiting for a new chapter after they read your last one. They are just going to go and read something else.
