Past:
Shubman
Perched on the bench in the hushed confines of the dressing room, I found my hands unconsciously rolling the bat grip, a rhythmic distraction failing to quell the nervous energy coursing through me. The realization of my feelings for Chucky had taken root, yet the courage to confess remained elusive, overshadowed by a persistent fear that gripped my heart.
Meanwhile, Anika was relentless in her pursuit to resurrect our old relationship. Her determined efforts manifested in a vigilant stance, attending matches with a presence that echoed in the VIP stands.
As I continued to roll the bat grip in my hands, the weight of unspoken feelings for Chucky and the fear of past repeating lingered in the air.
Compounding the complexities were the unforgiving headlines that dissected my personal life for public consumption. The most recent jab from the media, "The upcoming cricket star seems to be rekindling an old flame," reverberated in my thoughts.
The flame between Anika and me had long since flickered out, but the media and fans were adamant that something still lingered. Trying to quash these persistent rumours felt like an insurmountable task. Any attempt I made to address the situation seemed destined to turn the public against me, especially given Anika Agnihotri's seemingly flawless public image.
Anika, the daughter of India's top tycoon Angad Agnihotri, had carefully crafted her reputation, and her strong PR presence ensured that her true self remained hidden. This created a challenging scenario for me, as the public would find it inconceivable that someone with her background could be in the wrong.
Caught in this dilemma, it felt like a no-win situation. Trying to set the record straight risked becoming a public relations disaster. Anika's strategic appearances at the stadium, where she pretended to reignite a flame that no longer existed, breathed new life into the fanbase. What was once a supportive audience now contributed to the discomfort by creating cringe-worthy edits that only fueled the media-driven narrative.
The irritation heightened every time the camera panned towards Anika on my every boundary, but I made a conscious effort to redirect my gaze towards Chucky, seeking solace in her presence. The impending final of the T20 World Cup against the formidable Aussies loomed ahead, momentarily diverting my attention from the Anika saga.
I released a shaky breath, stealing a glance at my teammates engrossed in their pre-inning routines. We had triumphed over other teams in the league stages and in the semi-finals, bringing us face to face with the mighty Aussies once again. However, memories from the ODI World Cup began to haunt me, accompanied by the echoing comments from the audience.
The taunting remarks played like a broken record in my mind, intensifying my anxiety. "The performance of our aspiring cricket star, getting out with just 4 runs, raises doubts about whether he truly deserves the title of a prince in the cricket world" and "Overhyped player, doesn't know how to stay on the pitch, just knows how to create controversies." The cacophony of voices grew louder, echoing my fears and insecurities.
Unable to bear the weight of those haunting memories and disparaging comments, I abruptly rose from my seat, leaving the dressing room without exposing my vulnerability to others. Seeking refuge in the locker room, I slid down against the cold steel lockers, letting my tears flow freely. I pulled my legs towards my chest, burying my face in my hands and breathing heavily.
The fear of letting my team down again, as I had in the ODI World Cup final, consumed me. I hadn't fulfilled my role as a top-order batsman, putting additional pressure on the lower order leading to our failure. The thought of history repeating itself and the team collapsing haunted me. Lost in a spiral of negative thoughts, I started rocking back and forth, mumbling to myself in an attempt to find some semblance of calm amid the storm of anxiety.
