Chapter Two 🐾

Snowdrop was sitting in front of Frostkit, grooming her thoroughly when her littermates got their mentors.

"From this day forward," Oakstar meowed, gazing down at Sunkit, "until he has earned his warrior name, this apprentice will be called Sunpaw."

"Peachflame," meowed Oakstar, "you are ready for your first apprentice. You will begin Sunpaw's training. I expect you to pass on your knowledge of herbs to this young apprentice."

"Will do, Oakstar." Peachflame said, padding forward to tap noses with Sunpaw.

"From this day forward," Oakstar meowed, looking at Silverkit, "until she has earned her warrior name, this apprentice will be called Silverpaw."

"Dawnheart," meowed Oakstar, "This is your second apprentice. You will pass your warrior knowledge to this young apprentice."

"From this day forward," Oakstar meowed, glancing down at Riverkit, "until he has earned his warrior name, this apprentice will be called Riverpaw."

"Stoneclaw," meowed Oakstar, "you are ready for your first apprentice. You will pass your warrior knowledge to this apprentice."

"From this day forward," Oakstar meowed, gazing down at Summerkit, "until she has earned her warrior name, this apprentice will be called Summerpaw."

"Moonstone," meowed Oakstar, " You will pass your warrior knowledge to this young apprentice."

Frostkit got up and stood beside Oakstar.

"From this day forward," Oakstar meowed, glancing down at Frostkit, "until she has earned her warrior name, this apprentice will be called Frostpaw."

"Icefur," meowed Oakstar, "You will begin Frostpaw's training. I expect you to pass your warrior knowledge to this young apprentice."

"Silverpaw! Riverpaw! Sunpaw! Frostpaw! Summerpaw!"

"Silverpaw! Riverpaw! Sunpaw! Frostpaw! Summerpaw!"

The whole clan cheered the new apprentices' names. Frostpaw felt a bit overwhelmed.

Suddenly, barking erupted outside. The whole clan froze. Oakstar started yowling orders.

"Rainstorm! Bring all the kits inside the nursery, Stoneclaw, protect them! Morningwind! Organize groups of three! The new apprentices! Go into the apprentice den, Moonstone, protect them!" Oakstar yowled, scrabbling down the Highrock,"Warriors! Make a barrier around the gorse tunnel!"

Three dogs erupted into the clearing, all of them leaped over the barrier of cats. One poked his snout into the apprentice den, Moonstone frantically swiping at the dog, claws unsheathed. Frostpaw snarled and swiped at the dog, encouraging Frostpaw's littermates to do the same. The dog growled and snapped its teeth at Frostpaw. Searing pain erupted from Frostpaw's scruff and she yelped, hovering over the ground.

Frostpaw was about to give up hope when she was suddenly dropped. Her head hit the ground from three tail-lengths high and she collapsed. The last thing she saw before she blacked out was her mother facing the dog, spitting angrily.
