"Here's your present

"Here's your present." My father announced, throwing a medium-sized box at me but I was able to catch it. I give him an expression before examining the box carefully. It was perfectly wrapped with black wrapping paper and on top was a beautiful sky blue bow.

I look at the calendar that hung on my wall. It's New Year's Eve. My father got me a Christmas present today. I glance at him to see him leaning against my door frame and glaring at me. His cold eyes glued on me, patiently waiting for me to open my gift.

I thought nothing of it and began to rip the paper and noticed it was a tablet that had its own pen. I slowly read the words and noticed it was one of those tablets you use if you're mute or don't talk. Why would my father give me this? He hates the fact I don't talk.

"I bought you that because I want you to start communicating. Starting slow." He says, scratching the back of his head and looking at the box. I was confused about this but didn't bother to think about it any longer. I nodded my head to say thank you and he left. He didn't insult me, or call me names, he didn't hit me, he just gave me a late present and left.

Maybe mother forced him to get me this. But it didn't matter. This tablet allows me to communicate with others and finally have a say in certain things. But what's the point?

I don't want to talk to other people. Talking to Kai, my mother, and Naomi is enough. My voice has been heard by three people and that is a surprisingly big number for me. Not just one but three. Jeez.

I grab my phone and quickly begin to call my sun. After a few rings, she finally answers. She smiled at the camera and quickly put her phone up somewhere so I could see her and what she was doing. She was packing a bag.

"Hey, are you ready for the fireworks?" She asks, glancing at me for a second before continuing to stuff some things in her summer yellow bag. It hit me suddenly that we planned to go out to watch the fireworks. I quickly drop my phone on my bed and grab my empty black bag. I unzip it and begin to look for important things I'll need for this little trip.

I stuff some books, my mini speaker, a thin yet comforting navy blue blanket, sanitizer, and more. Once I was done, I picked my phone up and saw Naomi had hung up. I forgot to tell her about my late Christmas gift. I look at the box that lay on the bed and walk over to it. I sit beside it and pick it up.

I open it, pulling out the tablet and pen. It was customized. It had my name written on the pen in cursive and my initials on the back of the device. It was perfect. I turn it on and I'm welcomed by a white screen then some words. 'Hello.' It asked me to enter my name and asked me some other questions.

'Welcome Matteo.'

I smile a bit and put the device and pen in my bag.
