How long have I been me
& how long have I been someone else
When was the last time I looked at the real me in the mirror
Was the last time when I was ten
I ran upstairs sobbing in fear over my loved one overdosing
Swallowed my fear and hid my tears all the way up the steps
Locked myself in my room and took one big last cry I ever could
I looked my ten year old self in the eyes that day
And that was the day I learned what it was like to suppress
And I think I've suppressed anything I've ever felt since then
Til it boils up and explodes like a rapid fire that can't be tamed
And when I look in the mirror now I don't know if it can ever be tamed
If I could go back to ten year old me I would crawl out of that mirror and hold her and tell her to cry and tell her to never fight against trauma
I would tell her fighting against trauma would shape her into the unstable woman she doesn't deserve to be
maybe if she'd known it was ok to feel rather than suppress
We would recognize ourselves today

- I'm sorry ten year old me,
  I'm trying to do better.
Sincerely, 24 year old you.
