The Teenage Mask

A smile masks the sadness,
Inside a fragile soul,
A broken heart that hides,
Beneath the teenage mask.

A whisper of sorrow,
On trembling lips,
A silent cry for help,
That no one can hear.

But the smile remains,
Concealing emotions,
Protecting a heart that
Cannot bear its own weight.

A mask that must be worn,
A mask that must not slip,
A mask that must not break,
To keep the world oblivious.

But as the smile fades,
The pain grows stronger,
Leaving a void in the hearts of those teenagers.

A tear forms behind the mask,
As the stress of the world bears down
On these weak souls,
Causing them to break.

So behind every smile,
There is a soul yearning for acceptance,
For love, for peace,
For someone to care.

A soul that cannot express its feelings,
For fear of what the world could say or do,
And that's why these teenagers
Put on the teenage mask.

A teenage mask,
Worn in the morning,
Removed when night falls,
But the tears remain,
Even though the smile has faded.

A heavy heart,
Aching in pain,
A loneliness,
That haunts through the night,
Like a ghost,
A hollow shell,
Of the mask that once was.

Why must this mask remain?
Why is there no escape?
Why must the heart break,
And the soul yearn,
For a love and a world,
That does not care.

The mask protects the heart,
From those who do not care,
From those who cannot see,
The pain in the eyes of teenagers,
For whom life is hard,
And the darkness of adolescence,
Comes to consume them all.

This darkness,
Caursed by the smile,
Worn to protect a lonely heart,
From the cruelty of the world,
But when the mask is removed,
Will there be anyone to help?
Will anyone listen to their cry?
Will anyone see?

But when the mask is finally removed,
Will there be anyone there to listen?
Will anyone even care?
Because the mask has already served its purpose,
Protected the heart from the cruelty
Of a world that does not care,
Of a world that only sees,
A smiling face,
But behind it always,
A teenage heart that cries.
