"MISTER & MISS BLACK will be paired together. Mister Crouch & M-"
"Oh, sorry Professor, but I'm already paired up with Meadows for this project," Regulus interjected. Hopefully, his years of sucking up to Professor Slughorn could at least get him this. It was their first potions class as 5th years and being Cassy's potion partner would be a terrible start.
"Mister Black, you should know by now that you don't get to pick your own teams." Slughorn frowned.
"Professor, I agree with Black," Cassy spoke up, not looking over at him even when he glanced at her. Since when were they on a last-name basis? "I work better alone. Surely you would want us to hand in our best work."
He hesitated. "Well, I suppose. Since your grades already exceed that of your peers, it couldn't do too much harm."
Cassy beamed at him. "Thank you, professor!"
Regulus exchanged a nod with Dorcas. He couldn't do potions with Cassy. Everyone knew they weren't talking to each other, so why would Slughorn group them together? At least he got to work with Dorcas now.
"Actually, sir." Regulus cast a glance out the corner of his eye. Some random Hufflepuff had spoken up. "Our class is an even number, if Cassy works alone then that means someone else would have to work alone too. I'll work with Cassy."
Regulus' gaze narrowed. He looked over at Cassy, she was watching the boy with a withering glare as Slughorn agreed to the idea.
The boy moved over to sit with his new lab partner and ruffled up Cassy's hair as he sat down. She fixed her ponytail and focused on taking down what Professor Slughorn was writing on the board.
The potion went by fairly easily for Regulus and Dorcas, but the same couldn't be said for Cassy.
"Bro, are you blind? It says stir clockwise. Do you know what clockwise is? Hell, do you know what the word stir means?" Zeke asked patronizingly.
"Do you know that your voice sounds like a pre-pubescent rat? This is a shortcut. If you let it sit, the leaves don't crumble and the straining process is much easier. We can crumple them up ourselves after we strain them, it makes no difference." Cassy rolled her eyes.
"Fine, you're the potion weirdo." Zeke conceded.
"Thank you," She huffed. "Now we wait 10 minutes."
Cassy turned her attention to her notebook, where she was organizing the Slytherin quidditch tryouts. She'd been playing the beater position since 1rst year, so she wasn't new to the team, but this would be only her second year as captain of the Slytherin team, and she wanted it to go perfectly.
"You still haven't done your tryouts yet?" He raised his eyebrows, reading over her shoulder. Zeke was a chaser for the Hufflepuff team although not nearly as important to the team as he thought he was.
"I prefer to have a couple of practices with the original team to figure out what strengths we're lacking, so I know specifically what to look for in new players." She glared at him, snapping her book shut.
"Sorry, captain," He rolled his eyes.
"Maybe try having a strategy, then you might stand a chance against us."
"You're talking to the top-ranking team," He smirked at her.
"And yet, we won the tournament," She shrugged innocently.
"Because of favouritism," He scoffed.
Cassy snorted. "When have we ever been favourites? Everyone's too busy thinking we're gonna kill them in their sleep."
