For the last months Carlos's father, Alonso, had taken a lot of night shifts at his job, trying to get as much money as he could to support his family. This had left Carlos in charge of Maya more than usual. He woke up earlier to get ready before she woke up, that way he could make breakfast for the two of them. He also made some for his father, so that he'd have something to eat as soon as he woke up.
After he made breakfast he'd go and wake Maya up, he had to learn how to tie a ponytail because although Maya liked her hair down, the school didn't allow the students to wear it that way, he had also learned other hairdos, his favorite were pigtails because he thought Maya looked adorable with them, but whenever he did her hair like that she'd get home with it down and a teacher's note saying she took them off as soon as he dropped her off. He also helped her get dressed because whenever he let her choose her outfits she chose the worst combination of clothes a person could imagine.
They look good! - Maya would always argue as she ran away from her brother
You're crazy - Carlos would chuckle as he chased her around her room. Finally catching her and forcing her to change.
After that they would sit down and enjoy the breakfast Carlos had made and set goals for the day, those were mostly a ploy from Carlos to get Maya to be more responsible, although they actually helped him visualize what he had to do for the day. After they finished breakfast they would put their coats on and walk to school.
It was winter, the air was starting to get cold, sometimes they would get some snow but not a lot of it. Carlos always told Maya she needed to wear a scarf but she refused, saying it didn't let her breath.
It feels like a snake is strangling me Carlos - Maya told him as she jumped from one tile of the sidewalk to another, trying not to step on the lines
Well, imagine it is a kitten, a warm kitten wrapped around your neck keeping the cold air away from you - Carlos followed Maya as he carried her backpack on his back. A pink glittery backpack with a picture of a unicorn Riding a rainbow. Maya had drawn a pirate patch on top of the unicorn's eye and some of explosions behind it with a black marker. She said it gave the unicorn personality.
Hmm, I don't like cats, they're mean. - Maya looked at her brother - can it be a rat?
A rat? - Carlos chuckled and raised an eyebrow as he walked along his sister - you'd rather have a rat on your neck than a kitten?
Sure! rats are fun - Maya chuckled and stopped jumping - Hey Carlos - she said those last words in a singsong tone
Yeah? - Carlos stopped alongside her
I bet you i can jump farther than you can - she smirked at her brother
Oh yeah? - Carlos grinned and crossed his arms - well, I don't know...i AM taller than you
so? I am a better jumper! - Maya huffed - I bet I can beat you!
hm, well, what are you willing to bet? - Carlos raised an eyebrow
If I win you have to help me with my math homework! And if you win i will help you with yours - Maya smiled proudly
Oh? - Carlos held in his laughter, he loved his sister but darn was she bad at math - okay frijolito, you're on.
