The minute Can walked away, Corinna hopped out of the car and got behind the wheel before Sanem could. She already had Celia on FaceTime so they could all talk on the way home.
Sanem..ok, my girl. No more stalling. We need details NOW! What happened at the cafe yesterday with Can? Let's start there first, demanded Celia.
Girls, I don't even know where to start! My heart won't stop racing, my mind is like mud. I don't know what's happening right now! I'm losing my mind! Sanem yelled.
Take a deep breath and just start from the beginning please, Sanem. Tell me about Can in high school and up to tonight. PLEASE!
So Sanem told them what she remembered about Can in high school. Recalling those years, Sanem said:
I remember his sister Farah more than Can because she and I were in the same grade and had a lot of the same classes. But Can and Nicholas were two grades ahead of us. They knew each other but were not close friends at all. They were cool with each other from what I remember but they just ran in different circles.
So the teachers knew better than to pair Corinna and I together so I often got paired with Farah, at her insistence I'm realizing now. I didn't mind because she was fun to hang around with.
Whenever Farah and I had to do school projects, we ended up at her house because..well you know the circus that is my childhood home, Corinna.
Corinna just smiled and nodded, remembering the loud frantic Divit home back in Rome. The Divits were amazing, loving people but there was no quiet there. Ever!
Sanem continued:
Can was a tall gangly teenager who was really kind, but you know I only had eyes for Nicholas from the day he asked me to go to prom with him. I never noticed Can or anyone else for that matter after that.
But I do remember Can hanging around the house whenever Farah and I studied, offering to help or drive us to get whatever supplies we needed. He was really sweet and oddly attentive. I just chalked it up to him loving his sister. Looking back now, it seems strange that a senior would even be caught dead hanging with his little sister and her classmate.
Anyway, their dad worked a lot of hours but his mom was always home when I visited. She made the most amazing cookies. What were they again? Oh yeah. Chocolate chip espresso cookies. She was always so kind to me and I always felt welcome there. The whole family was just really nice.
When I graduated from Remide, I joined Nicholas at the university in Rome and I heard someone say that Can had decided to go to Greece for college. Sadly, I lost touch with both he and Farah. A mutual friend told me they lost their mom to cancer a few years after I left for college.
I really wish now that I had stayed in touch. I would have liked to have sent my condolences to the family. I didn't want to bring it up in front of everyone tonight but I'll hopefully get to talk to him and Farah later. Anyway, Nicholas and I were so focused on getting through college and starting our company and our life together and well..that was that.
Until yesterday...prompted Corinna, keeping her eyes on the road but bursting with curiosity.
Until yesterday, yes, at the cafe, Sanem continued. I was stressed because of the photographer situation..by the way..you're so gonna get it over that stunt you pulled with Can!
Corinna pretended she didn't hear that part and just smirked. Go on, honey..what happened at the cafe??
Sanem continued but cautiously because she knew what was about to happen when she confessed to them about the kiss...So I was distracted and not looking where I was going and barreled into the cafe while Can was apparently trying to leave the cafe and we just..collided. I was mortified so I ran into the ladies room and waited for him to leave.
