Emilia's POV:-
" Emilia, what are you doing here? Is Louis with you ?" Mom tried to look behind me.
" I came alone, Mom." I brushed past her inhaling the familiar aroma of tea and Mom's cheese omelet specialty.
It almost made me teary. It wasn't long since I used to live here, yet I felt like it had been years. Maybe it was because my life had changed so dramatically in such a short time.
However, after the conversation I heard between Louis and his mother, it seems some things will never change. Maybe after that time in the library, I had secretly started wondering if we might have a chance at a future together. Except hearing the contempt in Lady Ariella's voice made me realize how foolish I was.
I wasn't ashamed of being a commoner, but I knew how snobbish the aristocracy was. They would never accept my marriage to Louis, and to make matters worse, I was a murderer. I can't say I regretted acting in self-defense, but to the world, I was a shady character. It didn't seem likely that they would ever accept me as Queen.
" What's wrong? Oh, don't tell me you fought with Louis! "Mom's blue eyes were wide with horror, and it would have been almost comical had I not been in such a bad mood.
" You seem to care more about this marriage than me. Don't worry, I didn't fight with your favorite son-in-law." I said sarcastically.
" You have been in such a bad mood lately. Why don't you understand it's because I care about you that I want this marriage to work!"
" I am sorry if I hurt your feelings, Mom. I don't know what's gotten over me." I try to change the topic. I rarely fight with Mom, but these days, I have been cranky around her. It's probably because she is determined to turn my marriage into something real.
She doesn't get my fears and insecurities. Though it isn't entirely her fault. I never did tell her that I had been in love with Louis before. Maybe if she knew it would make her understand why I feared heartbreak the way that I did.
" Don't try to change the topic, Emilia. Tell me what happened, or else I will scold you for not having breakfast with your husband." She didn't seem to be angry anymore, just concerned.
I knew she wouldn't stop nagging at me till I told her everything. So I did.
" That haughty bitch! She screwed got knows how many men behind her husband's back. Yet she dares to look down upon you. She seems to forget that she very nearly went to prison and would have been serving a life sentence with her boyfriend if the Queen hadn't saved her ass." Mom was fuming.
" Maybe I should pay your mother-in-law a little visit."
" Ignore her Mom. She's not worth the trouble. I don't need that woman's approval. Let her think what she wants. Whether she likes it or not we are already married and there's nothing she can do about it. " I hug Mom, feeling a rush of affection towards her.
" You may pretend that her words don't matter to you but you did become upset by them. She wants to make you believe you are not good enough for her son. She's trying to drive you two apart and I am not going to just stand there and let it happen!"
Poor Mom believed that Lady Ariella was the only obstacle to our marriage.
" You are probably not going to like what I say Mom but this marriage is not going to last. I did some thinking while I was on my way here and I remembered how determined Louis was to become the King. He would probably want a Queen with powerful connections, who knows how to conduct herself in high society. Most of all he wouldn't want a woman who's tainted with any sort of scandal. He had to join the Air Force to improve his image after the fiasco involving his mother. I am sure he will divorce me one day and marry the woman he sees as a good future Queen."
