Seven Years Ago...
Emilia's POVI hated how tongue-tied and vulnerable I had felt in front of Tiffany today. Maybe I could have handled the situation better. Samantha would have come up with a witty comeback, unlike my lame one. Nevertheless, it was enough to shut Tiffany's mouth, as she probably wasn't expecting me to say anything to her at all. Before I could think about it more, Tessa appeared in the corridor outside the classroom.
" Emilia, is everything ok?" She looked concerned.
Was my distress that obvious? I felt embarrassed and my first instinct was to hide things from her. Then I thought, maybe, my closed-off nature is why I don't have a lot of friends. Maybe, it wouldn't be so bad letting somebody in on my problems.
" It's Tiffany. She's been acting weird, asking all sorts of personal questions about me. Like who I have dated, whether I have even kissed someone. Like who the hell even does that?" I realized my voice was trembling with anger.
" She's psychotic like that. Probably thinks you are stealing the attention from her because you are the new girl. You shouldn't let her get to you." Tessa rubbed my arm soothingly.
" Why does she think I am stealing the spotlight from her? No one even wants to talk to me!" I fumed.
" It's not like they don't want to talk to you, Emilia. It's just that they don't understand you. Don't mind me but you are different from them. More reserved and serious than most kids our age. It frustrates them. It's like you have built a wall around yourself. But don't think for a second they don't notice you. They may not be nice to you, but you do have their attention. Tiffany's reaction today just proved that. But you need to develop a thicker skin because you will seriously need it from now on."
Her words left me feeling queasy. " What do you mean Tessa?"
" I meant now that you are not in her good books, Tiffany might try to use her minions to make you feel miserable. "
I groaned, this was exactly what I feared. " Why did I have to be the weirdo in school? "
" You are not a weirdo Emilia. Just closed off and aloof. In fact, you are actually kind of like Louis." Tessa had a hint of a smile on her face.
" If he and I were alike, I also would have had the entire school worshipping at my feet," I grumbled.
" The only reason why the students chase around him is due to his status as Prince. His being a star player on the basketball team is obviously one reason. Probably his looks have something to do with it too. If it weren't for these things, no one would have given a shit. We have been studying with him since secondary school and few of us really know him. Even the girls he dates don't seem to have an emotional connection with him. Tiffany is the only one besides the basketball team that sits with Louis at the lunch table".
Her words almost made me feel sorry for the cold little prick. Almost being the imperative word. If Tiffany was really going to declare some sort of war on me, Louis would probably act as her commander-in-chief. Instead of empathizing with him, I should be worrying about myself. I couldn't ignore the fact that he's been acting weird around me since that photograph incident. I was now sure, that he suspected I was trying to take a picture of him. Maybe even Tiffany's behavior was a result of that.
Honestly speaking they weren't wrong for that matter. What I did was downright embarrassing and screwed up. Mom was hungry for gossip. But probably not to the extent of, appreciating me acting like a stalker. She wanted me to be friends with them, not spy on them. Maybe I knew that being part of their social circle wasn't possible for me, so I decided to settle for the next best thing. Though I had a feeling I was going to get more than I bargained for.
