Eloise grabbed the bags from the trunk, her expression gleaming with mischief. "You'll thank me later," she said, locking the car.
I rolled my eyes, falling into step beside her as we climbed the stairs to our third-floor apartment. "Sure, because nothing says 'thank you' like overpriced lace I'll probably never wear."
Eloise smirked but didn't reply. The familiar creak of our front door greeted us as she pushed it open. The scent of lavender candles lingered in the air, a signature touch of Eloise's attempt to make our space feel cosy.
Dumping the bags on the kitchen counter, I headed straight to the couch. Eloise followed, kicking off her shoes. "So, what's on tonight? A rom-com or another one of your true crime marathons?" she asked, flopping down beside me.
"Neither. I need a distraction, so horror it is," I said with a grin, grabbing the remote.
"Oh great," she groaned. "Because nothing screams relaxation like watching someone get chased by a masked killer."
I chuckled and flicked through the streaming service, settling on a classic slasher film. Just as the opening credits rolled, my phone buzzed. I glanced at the screen to see an email notification.
"Probably another spam," I muttered, unlocking it. My eyes scanned the message, and my heart skipped a beat.
Subject: Collaboration Proposal from Astor & Co.
Dear Ms. Ricci,
We have been following your fashion line and are impressed with your unique designs. We believe your work aligns with our upcoming project and would like to discuss a potential collaboration. Please let us know a convenient time for a meeting.
Best regards,
Asher Astor
Creative Director, Astor & Co.
"Holy crap," I whispered. My hands shook as I reread the email.
"What's wrong?" Eloise asked, leaning over to peek at my phone. Her eyes widened. "Aurora! Astor & Co.? Do you know how big they are?"
I nodded, my throat dry. Astor & Co. wasn't just big, they were iconic. Partnering with them could catapult my brand into the fashion world overnight.
"This..." this can't be real," I muttered.
Eloise snatched my phone and scanned the email. "It's real. Look at the email domain, totally legit. You have to respond!"
"I... I don't know," I stammered, sinking into the couch. "What if it's too much? What if I'm not ready?"
Eloise grabbed my shoulders, forcing me to meet her determined gaze. "Listen to me, Aurora. This is your shot. The opportunity you've been waiting for. You can't back out now."
Her words resonated, but doubt still lingered. "What if I mess it up?"
Eloise rolled her eyes. "You won't. You're talented, passionate, and more than capable. Stop overthinking and hit reply."
Taking a deep breath, I nodded. My fingers hovered over the keyboard before I finally typed out a response.

Dear Ms. Astor,
Thank you for reaching out. I'm incredibly excited about the opportunity to collaborate and would love to discuss this further. Please let me know your availability for a meeting.
Kind regards,
Aurora Sienna Ricci
I hit send and exhaled, my pulse racing.
"There. Done," I said, setting the phone aside.
Eloise beamed. "I'm so proud of you, Aurora. This is it, the start of something amazing."
I hoped she was right. As the movie played in the background, my mind buzzed with possibilities. For the first time in months, I felt a flicker of hope. Maybe, just maybe, my dream wasn't as far out of reach as I'd thought.
But life has a funny way of throwing curveballs.
As if on cue, my phone buzzed again. This time, it wasn't an email. It was a text.
Unknown Number:
We need to talk. Call me when you can.
My heart sank. There was only one person who could send a message like that, Lorenzo, my ex.
"What now?" Eloise asked, noticing the change in my expression.
I shook my head, gripping the phone tighter. "Nothing. Just... someone I thought I'd left behind."
But deep down, I knew. Lorenzo always had a knack for showing up when I least expected, and least wanted him to.
