Chapter Ten
The rest of the evening passed in a haze of champagne bubbles and whispered conversations, but no matter how hard I tried to immerse myself in the event, my mind kept returning to Lorenzo That damn look in his eyes, the one that still held a piece of the man I once thought I could spend forever with. It lingered like a ghost, following me around the room, even though I’d tried to bury it.
Eloise, ever the perceptive one, noticed my distracted mood as soon as we sat back down.
“Aurora,” she said, her voice low but firm, “Are you okay?”
I nodded, trying to force a smile. “I’m fine. Just... thinking.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Thinking about Lorenzo?”
I didn’t answer at first, just swirling my champagne in the glass, watching the liquid catch the light. I could still see him standing there in my mind, tall, handsome, and seemingly unaffected by everything that had passed between us. But I knew I wasn’t the same Aurora anymore. I couldn’t let him or the past dictate my future.
“I don’t know, Eloise,” I admitted after a beat. “It’s just... weird. I thought I was over him. But seeing him again, hearing him talk about his company... it felt like I was right back where we left off. Like time hadn’t even passed.”
“Yeah, I get that,” she said, her tone softer now. “But you’ve grown so much since then. You’ve built something for yourself, something real. You don’t need him to feel complete. You’re doing fine on your own.”
Her words hit me in places I didn’t even realize needed healing. She was right. I had been so focused on the past that I hadn’t given myself credit for how far I had come.
I had my fashion line, I had a plan, and I had the opportunity to make something of myself without needing to rely on anyone, least of all, Lorenzo.
"You're right," I said, feeling a sense of clarity settling in. "I can't keep looking back."
"Good," Eloise replied, her smile returning. "Now, let’s enjoy the rest of the night. We’re not letting some old flame ruin this."
I appreciated her optimism, but the seed of doubt Lorenzo had planted earlier still lingered in my mind. As the auction continued, my thoughts drifted back to him, to what we could have had if things had turned out differently. What if I had fought harder for us? What if he hadn’t walked away?
I shook my head, pushing those thoughts aside.
The night ended with us heading back to our apartment, the city lights casting an ethereal glow over the streets. We made our way to our building in relative silence, both of us exhausted but with a strange sense of contentment in the air. But as soon as we stepped inside, I knew something was off.
There was a note on the kitchen counter.
I frowned, walking over to pick it up. It was written in familiar handwriting, the elegant script that could only belong to my best friend, Eloise.
“Aurora,” it read. “I’ve been offered a job opportunity in Miami. It’s a big deal, and I’ve decided to take it.”
My heart stopped. I blinked at the note, unable to fully process what I was reading. Eloise was leaving? She had just found stability in New York, and now she was leaving for Miami? I felt a lump form in my throat, and for a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
“Eloise?” I called, my voice shaky.
She walked into the room, her face painted with a mix of excitement and sadness. “I didn’t want to tell you this way, but I’ve made up my mind. This is an opportunity I can’t pass up.”
I stared at her in disbelief. “But... what about us? What about our apartment, our life here?”
Her face softened. “I’ll still be here for you, Aurora. But this is something I need to do for myself.”
The tears I hadn’t even realized were threatening to fall came spilling out, but Eloise was quick to wrap her arms around me.
“I know this is sudden. But I’ve been thinking about it for a while now. I need to take this chance.”
I nodded, still feeling the weight of the situation. “I’ll miss you so much,” I whispered. “But I get it. You have to do what’s best for you.”
“I’ll always be here,” she promised, pulling back to look me in the eye. “And you have to remember that you’ve got this. You’re strong, Aurora. You’ve made it this far. I believe in you.”
And just like that, my world shifted again. It was like a chapter in my life that was ending, and I didn’t know how to feel about it.
I couldn’t help but think about the timing. Was this a sign? Was I supposed to be alone to focus entirely on my career?
Eloise left that night to pack, and I spent the hours afterwards in a daze, unsure of what to do next. My best friend, my sister, was moving away, and I was left to navigate this new phase of life on my own. The apartment suddenly felt emptier, and the weight of my decisions loomed over me like a heavy cloud.
But amidst it all, one thing was clear: I couldn’t lose myself again. It's not like I had with Lorenzo. Not like I had with everything I had put on hold in the past.
I woke up the next morning with a newfound sense of purpose. Maybe this was exactly what I needed, a chance to focus entirely on building my brand, on creating something that would stand on its own.
But as I sat at my desk, answering emails, my phone buzzed with a notification that caught my eye. A message from an unknown number.
"Hi, Aurora. It’s Lorenzo. We need to talk.”
