I shut the door and lock it as Emberly's small body clings to mine.

I stroke her hair and try my best to sooth her.

I've never been that friend you'd confine in, I've always been the friend you'd go to for a good time.

But right now all I want to do is comfort her.

I don't know why I care this much about her but the fear in her cloudy grey green eyes leaves an achy feeling in my chest.

"You're okay now." I thread my fingers in her hair and stroke her back.

She pulls away and looks over my shoulder. Shock takes over her beautiful features.

Oh shit! I forgot that there were other people here.

"Oh. Sorry I didn't know there was a whole group here." She says nervously.

I turn around and my eyes lock with Cade.

He raises an eyebrow in a way that says 'I told you not to tell anyone about this'.

I shrug in an apologetic way even though I don't really give a fuck.

Emberly was in danger and she came to me for help.

Me.

"So, who's this?" Birdie says with a bright smile.

Man do I love that girl. She's like a little sister me. A somewhat annoying little sister that can make you smile any time of the day.

"This is Emberly. Her and her mother are staying with us for a while." I put my hand on Her lower back and guide her to the empty seat next to mine.

"Do you know who was out there?" Cade asks.

"No...but." She looks over at me with with tears in her eyes that refuse to leave.

I give her a reassuring look and tip my head towards to the others. "Go ahead. You can trust them." I whisper.

"I've been getting texts recently. Well only one at first, then just now in the car telling me to 'look out the window.' So I did and there was a shadowy figure standing by one of the cars. And I ran." She lifts her hand and brings to her nose wiping the snot.

How is she more beautiful when crying.

"So you've gotten a text too." Birdie asks. But it's not really a question it's more of a statement. "Can we see it?"

"Sure." Shortcake pulls out her phone and sets it on the table for everyone too see.

It's says. 'Don't get too comfortable in you and mommy dearest's new home. Who knows how long you'll be there. Until next time Emberly,
Unknown.'

I look up from the phone and say, "Is this what everyone else's text looked like? I mean I would know considering I got some creep outside my window instead of a text." I murmur that last part.

"I didn't get a text. I was...followed home one night." Tatum says and looks over at Will.

I wonder what that look was about.

"I was followed too. On the way to a friends house." As Hayven speaks she does everything in her power not to look at Silas.

Am I missing something?

"Mine was sort of a threat just like Emberly." Will pauses but hesitantly says, "They implied that something bad might happen to the kings and or Tatum."

"Same here. They threatened to release a secret." Jax's eyes lock on Temperance's.

Seriously what is going on with them. They never talk to each other let alone stare at each other like that.

Anymore at least.

"Yeah they threatened to hurt Birdie." Cade leans back in his chair and his gaze slides over to a blushing Birdie who's biting her lip and picking at her nails.

"My text was about my mother. They said she would pay but I don't know what for." Birdie finally looks up but when she sees that Cades looking her she looks down again.

"The text I got said that I failed at protecting Hayven but that was the least of my worries when it came to protecting her." Silas speaks.

Hayven and Silas use to date. Auctally it was more than that. They were soulmates.

Nobody knows what happened though.

"Temperance what about you?" Birdie asks.

"I was home alone and I went downstairs to get a snack when I heard a noise outside in the backyard. I grabbed a knife and looked over to see a dark figure, like you Emberly." She pauses. "So I ran upstairs."

The table falls silent.

Why us. Why this particular group of people.

Before I could voice that question everyone's phone dings.

UNKNOWN: So I see you've figured out that you're not the only one I've been watching. Soon enough you'll see why.

Until then,
Unknown.

Everyone looks up at the same time with the same look in their eyes.

We are so fucked.
