Author POV
The marriage preparations were in full swing, with excitement crackling in the air. The sangeet had already taken place, and now Mehek was fully immersed in coordinating the final details. She was determined to make everything perfect, especially for her sister Riya, despite the underlying tension in her family.
Each day, Mehek felt the weight of her responsibilities, but it was also a relief to be busy. She found solace in the bustling environment, a distraction from the snide remarks of her stepmother and the dismissive attitude of her sister. What perplexed her was the lingering thoughts about Mr. Malhotra. He remained as enigmatic as ever—his cold demeanor a constant reminder that they were from different worlds.
Meanwhile, Abeer was struggling with his own emotions. As he watched Mehek diligently handle the preparations, he felt an unexpected tug at his heart. He couldn't quite place it; maybe it was admiration for her determination, or perhaps it was her infectious laughter that made even the dullest moments seem brighter. Yet, he was determined to keep his feelings in check. After all, he was bound to Riya, and that was the reality he had to face.
The day before the wedding, the house was a flurry of activity. Mehek was overseeing the final touches when she noticed the decorative lights flickering erratically. She stepped outside to check the power source and, in her haste, collided with Abeer, who was walking in the opposite direction, lost in thought.
"Watch where you're going!" Mehek exclaimed, trying to regain her balance.
"Maybe you should pay more attention," Abeer replied coolly, though his eyes softened as he saw the concern etched on her face.
"What's bothering you, Mr. Malhotra? You look like you've seen a ghost," she teased, a hint of mischief in her tone.
"Nothing I can't handle," he replied, his expression returning to its usual stoicism.
They both turned their attention to the flickering lights, and Mehek took a moment to assess the situation. "Looks like the wiring is faulty. We should probably call someone to fix it before the wedding."
"Or we could just do it ourselves," Abeer suggested, surprising even himself with the offer.
"Are you serious? You? Fixing lights?" Mehek laughed, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
"Why not? I have a basic understanding of electrical work," he replied, his pride pricking at the edges of his voice.
With a raised eyebrow, Mehek challenged, "Alright then, Mr. Malhotra, let's see what you've got."
Abeer smirked, enjoying her spirited attitude. They made their way to the back of the house, where the lights were strung up in a vibrant array of colors. The two of them worked together, and Abeer found himself surprisingly entertained by Mehek's playful banter. She handed him tools, her laughter ringing in the air as they fumbled with wires and connections.
"Careful, you're about to become a human chandelier if you're not cautious," she joked, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
Abeer chuckled, a rare sound that surprised him. "I can't believe I'm doing this," he muttered, shaking his head as he secured the last wire.
In that moment, the wall Abeer had built around himself began to feel a little less imposing. He noticed how Mehek's laughter brightened the dimly lit area and how effortlessly they worked together. As they finished, the lights flickered back to life, illuminating the space with a warm glow.
"See? All fixed," Mehek declared, grinning proudly.
"Not bad for a day's work," Abeer conceded, a small smile creeping onto his lips.
They stood there for a moment, enjoying the satisfaction of their success, until a sudden shout from the house broke the spell. Riya was calling for Mehek, impatient and demanding as always.
"Guess I'm needed back in the chaos," Mehek sighed, rolling her eyes.
"Good luck with that," Abeer replied, his tone unexpectedly gentle.
As she turned to leave, Mehek glanced back at Abeer, their eyes locking for a brief second. There was an unspoken understanding between them—a momentary bridge across the gap of their differences.
The next day would be filled with joy and celebration, but for now, both of them were oblivious to the storm brewing just beyond the horizon, a storm that would threaten everything they thought they knew.
